In July, summer settles in for the long haul. Hot days and warm nights beg for a sweet but cool treat, and that’s why we’re celebrating ice cream all month long. From rich and creamy custard-based ice cream to dairy-free options, we’ll bring you recipes and stories that are guaranteed to keep you blissfully chilled out.

It's an especially appropriate day to kick off our ice cream social: Today is National Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day! From avocado to black pepper, there are lots of interesting options out there that go way beyond vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.

Ice Cream

Do you have a favorite ice cream recipe to share? Leave a link in the comments, and join the celebration! And if you're just an ice cream eater...not an ice cream maker...I'd love to hear your stories about the most creative ice cream flavor you've ever tried. Share that story in the comments, as well!

So tell me: how do you like to eat your ice cream (whether that’s soft-serve, hand-dipped, frozen custard or a vegan variation)? Take the poll now!

I just tried a strawberry-vodka sorbet last night, made with strawberry-infused vodka. I'll put it on the blog soon. The last one I made was avocado pistachio ice cream. The avocado provided lovely creaminess and worked perfectly with the pistachio flavor. http://reciperenovator.com/special-diets/vegan/pis...

I haven't made much ice cream--the most recent attempts were actually sorbets--but I sure love to eat it! :) Recently I've discovered Talenti gelato and I'm in love! Does that count as ice cream? :)

Homemade ice cream sounds delicious right now with this Texas heat! I'll have to try some of the recipe links already added.

I haven't perfected any homemade recipes yet but decided to share the super easy Homemade Ice Cream Cake recipe my family loves. You can find it here: http://onemoorefamily.blogspot.com/2011/07/oh-so-e...

I am more a consumer than maker of ice cream, but when I was a kid, Haagendaz used to make honey vanilla ice cream. I've recently found honeycomb flavor at my local gelato shop - there's something about honey that makes frozen cream taste absolutely divine :)

In our summer heat, I think I could enjoy ice cream for every meal. I do like lots of different flavors, but I tend to mostly make vanilla. This summer, I want to try making my own cones and some different syrups and toppings for sundaes.

Oh heck yeah! We finally broke down and bought an ice cream maker and dang, I wish we'd gotten it sooner!

My first attempt was amazing, seasonal, and used coconut milk so that it would be non-dairy.
