I am a vegan.

Well I'm a lot of things but its one of the many tags I've attached to myself over the years.

Now I am normally the easy going vegan.

I'm not the sort to explain in graphic detail the life and death of your chicken sandwich over lunch. Nor will I refuse to eat with meat eaters, criticise their eating habits or push my own beliefs on others.

Until today......

The trouble is, while I've been busy doing my best NOT to look like some freaky, lentil munching, bunny hugging hippy (erm..which I probably am..but...) Omnivores are busy going out of their way to get ME!

Close friends once assumed that my husband was only vegan when I was around, and tried to feed him steak one night when he visited them without me! (seriously, did they really think I had a wuss for a husband?)

I asked in a coffee shop a few weeks ago if any of the cakes on sale were dairy free (they had a heap of Gluten free ones). The chef came out and said "Oh yes! These are dairy free, no milk , just some butter!"

O...K....

But the last straw, the absolute last one was a comment today on a friends FB page.

He started up an interesting debate on his blog on Feminism and Veganism and whether they should be one and the same, and one of his friends posted some comments which ended in ...

"I admire Vegans and vegetarians and why is it that they frequently seem to see themselves on the moral high ground just because of their choices about diet?"

Right.

Well maybe its because we DO have the moral high ground.

And BTW, saying you admire someone before get snippy about it doesn't cancel out the rudeness in my humble opinion.

What are morals?

"Conforming to standards of what is right or just in behavior; virtuous" According to the dictionary.

So in what way does the abuse of animals in factory farms and then the inhumane killing of them for you to eat count up to good morals?

Is it ok "morally" because they are animals and not humans??

Be careful, not so long ago that how people looked at different races and religions of people.

So ..this time, in defence of my way of life and what I feel to be Good Morals, I am going to say YES, I will take that moral high ground. Thank you.

Is it your flab or your brain you need to fight? Answers on a postcard please.

I may not be more a more ethical person, I am a more ethical eater.
