Wendy Davis looks like she’s ready to run… for governor of Texas. Politico first reported Thursday that Wendy Davis is telling key Democrats that she's making a bid for the top office of the Lone Star State. Well, actually she won’t make her official announcement until next week.
Here’s the official scoop according to the @WendyDavisTexas Twitter account:
On October 3, I'll announce my future plans at the same place where I received my high school diploma. Join us: http://t.co/cy6ATcCAvT— Wendy Davis (@WendyDavisTexas) September 26, 2013
Lots of supporters are ready to #StandWithWendy once again, as they did during her June filibuster at the Austin Statehouse. Emily’s List already has Wendy Davis’ name prominently billed on its website.
Here's some reaction from Twitter in support of Wendy:
"Vote @WendyDavisTexas for Governor. She's not Rick Perry." BOOM. My work is done here.— TheBloggess (@TheBloggess) September 27, 2013
Just FYI @WendyDavisTexas, say the word and I will drop everything and be your campaign photographer.— mindy tucker (@withreservation) September 27, 2013
Okay southern states ...Its time to collectively push back against oligarchs and theocrats starting with TX @WendyDavisTexas for governor— Victor Looklook (@zoomarang) September 27, 2013
I'd like to see Wendy Davis become the Governor of Texas. Imagine that.— Paul Myers (@pulmyears) September 27, 2013
Although she has no shortage of enthusiastic support among Democrats and especially pro-choice women, Davis also elicits a pretty strong reaction from conservatives, some of whom have nickhamed her "Abortion Barbie" after her filibuster against closing Texas abortion clinics. Here are some of the tweets:
Wendy Davis thinks Texas is going to elect her governor. That's it. That's the punch line.— Robert (@RobertDaneCA) September 27, 2013
A filibuster does not a Governor make! Luck + $40 million is needed by Wendy Davis - yikes! http://t.co/ehm0raGpIO— Roger Rathman (@iRathman) September 27, 2013
Another way of putting this is that Wendy Davis isn’t a very strong gubernatorial candidate: http://t.co/Afn3C8MNWw— Matt Yglesias (@mattyglesias) September 27, 2013
What Davis might really need to secure the statehouse is money – a lot of it.Davis is likely to face GOP favorite, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who is known for filing numerous lawsuits against the Obama administration, next November. According to USA Today, Abbott has about $20 million in his campaign account.
