What appliances can you not live without?

microwave

We have been hanging all of our laundry out to dry ever since June, when we had the unfortunate wet- sneakers- in- the- dryer incident.

And since the yard is lovely and I like the whole idea of hanging laundry anyway, I've been buying new glasses, weed wrenches and um, raspberry bushes instead of a new clothes dryer.

Then the microwave went to heaven to be with the clothes dryer. Oddly, I've found this to be much more inconvenient than losing the clothes dryer.

My daughter, whose mean mother now makes her do her own laundry, has been begging for a new clothes dryer but thinks my microwave angst is just funny. Once she offered to take our plates to the corner where the microwave used to be and hum in a monotone while turning them around and around on the counter.

Ha, Funny.

When our washing machine went out last spring, we replaced it as soon as we could. When SEVERAL of our dishwashers died in rapid succession, I would have sold my legs if necessary to get a working machine back ASAP.

We don't have a garbage disposal, though, and couldn't care less. Same with an electric can opener, rice cooker, Wii and TiVo.

I would kill anyone who tried to take any of our multiple computers, though, and I NEEEED my George Foreman electric grill.

What about you? What appliances can you not live without?

I had to think really hard

At first I thought I'd say washing machine. I hate going to the laundry mat. HATE. LOATHE. But then I realized I could do it if I absolutely had to (even though I'd hate every single second of it). And then I thought of a stove but I've lived without a stove but it's doable. (Hello crock pot.)

The one appliance that I couldn't live without? A refridgerator. I've done it for a week and IT SUCKED. I didn't even have a mini one in my dorm room and IT SUCKED.

And a computer. Need to have a computer (and a modem).

I am not worthy

I've had lots of very different responses, but not from anyone who'd consider going without a WASHING MACHINE.  Much less a STOVE.

I am not worthy!

I've managed without a washing machine... even while I had a child in cloth diapers.  However, (or maybe THEREFORE?) I would never, ever do it again.  Crock pots take so much advance planning, but maybe if I had my MICROWAVE back I'd be willing to trade in the stove.    Totally agree on the indispensible-ness of fridge and computer -- AND modem -- though.

I've had to live without a kitchen

I once moved into an apartment that was being renovated. To the point where people asked which room was the kitchen. I discoved that (for a limited period of time) I can live without a stove if I have to. Microwave, crockpot, indoor grill...you can still cook without it. But living without a refrigerator is really, really hard. We didn't have one for the first week and when you don't have *anything* but a crockpot and a microwave you are really limited with what you can cook. We ate a lot of take out and microwave meals.

what appliance I couldn't live without...

I agree with Sassymonkey. Living without a fridge would be such a major ordeal. Right now our microwave is broken. It's an above-the-range type so it's expensive to replace and we're doing without now. I actually open the thing and put food in sometimes still before remembering. Doh. But I have an oven. So it could be worse. I've heard of people cooking just about everything in a crock pot too!
