What Are Your 2010 Food Resolutions?

It's the first official Monday of 2010, and resolutions are on a lot of people's minds. One of the areas many people make resolutions for the year (whether they break them or not) are related to food. Eating less and losing weight, kicking a particular craving, or learning a new culinary skill are common food-related goals for the New Year.

Mei of Mei's Diet and Weight Loss Journal has set an ambitious health goal for herself:

Although I’m still hoping to reach super-model status by February 9th, let’s not forget that the entire reason and only impetus for me to have started this weight loss program at this juncture in my life was: to avoid the insulin monster, and maybe even kick the diabetes entirely.  (I’m told it can be done!)

Thanks to the power of social media, Lori of RecipeGirl has started a revolution with her 10 in '10 Healthy Challenge. Though the event officially started on January 2, it's not too late to join.

What is this all about?
It’s about wanting to feel healthy.  Everyone has a different vision of what being healthy means.  Some want to lose weight, some feel that they’re already at a comfortable weight but they would like to make a commitment to exercise, some would like to eat healthier, etc.  Everyone will have their own individual goals for this healthy challenge.

Who can participate?
Everyone…

If you’re a reader of my blog… plan to set your own goals, follow along with the posts, and comment if you wish with your own progress.  We can help motivate each other to do well.

If you’re on Twitter… we’re going to use the hashtag #10in10 to tweet updates.  Do a search for this hashtag if you’re looking to find others who are tweeting about the challenge.

If you have a blog… feel free to write about the challenge on your blog and encourage your readers to follow along with you.  You have permission to use the large graphic above, and here’s a badge that you can feature in your sidebar with a link to this post.

Teaching: I’ll help a friend get over her fear of cooking fish. And, I’m planning to introduce a new set of women to the concept of food swapping (cooking in groups of 2 or 3 and then getting together to swap the food)

Learning: A friend and I have decided to learn together how to really decorate cakes. Another friend is teaching me to cook the foods of her native country of India.

Michelle of Culinography said she's gotten tired of putting weight loss resolutions on her list, so this year, she took a different approach.

I’ve picked out seven things that I’ve been meaning to try or meaning to master… but never have. And in 2010, I will. And you, my wonderful readers, will not only hold me accountable (you will, won’t you?) but you’ll also reap the rewards of what I hope will be seven fruitful blogging adventures!

Though Sarah of Cucina Bella recapped her 2009 resolutions rather than presenting new resolutions for this year, her post, which includes lists of her some of her favorite food bloggers, her favorite tastes, and her favorite recipes from the year, is worth a read for the inspiration it can provide.

Do you have any food-related resolutions for the year? Share them in the comments below.

I'm mainly interested in repurposing or 'make it once, use it twice' sort of things.  Both of my kids are young, so someone is constantly hanging off my legs and anything that helps speed up the process is a huge help!  lol

Jamie,

I regularly cook too much just so I'll have leftovers -- I love them! But I agree with you -- finding ways to reuse and stop waste is critical for saving money. What particular challenges do you have with leftovers? Is it that you're just left with too much? That what you're making can't be repurposed? I can definitely deal with this in a future post, but would love to hear more about what your specific challenges are.

Definitely on the baking bread for the first time train! But it too is my resolution for 2010. If you find a good recipe, let me know!

My food related resolution is to find new, creative ways to make-over leftovers!  We hate eating leftovers and it means we end up tossing entirely too much food.  It's wasteful and is costing us a fortune.

Russian Season, that's a very interesting paradox -- I think I sometimes get so wrapped up in how much I'm enjoying what I'm cooking that I actually eat more of it. Still...cooking at home is undeniably healthier than eating out all the time. No matter what, I applaud your resolution!

Kalyn, I'm awful about that all-or-nothing thinking when it comes to exercise. Your resolution to do at least a few minutes of exercise a day is a really great one -- that time does add up, and it's much better than doing nothing! And it gives you a low bar to hop over on days when you really just don't feel like working out.

And I'm sitting here, on purpose, with a glass of water, too!

I have such a ridiculous Diet Coke obsession that there's no way I could give it up. I've tried...and failed...so many times before that I just don't try anymore. But I love your determination -- there's no question that you'll be healthier in 2010 just for ditching fast food and soda!

I think that's an excellent (and perfectly reasonable) augmentation of the resolution. ;-)

Am amending it to #3 have people over for dinner each week I'm IN TOWN for the weekend. Heh.

My food resolution is to cook more :) I've noticed a funny thing - the more I cook the less I eat :) I enjoy the process of cooking itself, tasting, taking photos for my blog, then writing a post - so eating what I've cooked is of secondary importance!

And of course my second resolution is to walk more - also on weekdays. It's not too entertaining though when you have to carry your 3.5kg laptop to the office and back to home every day :-/

I'm also one of the ones doing phase one for a few weeks (or however long it takes to get back to my pre-holiday weight!  And go Anne and Liz too!  Day three here.)   My other resolutions are more about wellness than they are about the food, but here goes:

1.  Exercise EVERY DAY even if it's only for a few minutes.

2.  Drink WATER more than other drinks.  (I wouldn't even think of making a resolution to give up coffee and Diet Coke, that would be silly.  But I really need to add water.)

3.  Don't eat at the computer.  (This is a big one for me, but I got a great new table that's making me want to eat in the kitchen a lot more so that helps!)

I also love Julie's resolution of having friends to dinner at least once a week!  I should do that one too.

Hey Jen 5 pts

Is ditch fast food. A friend of mine did it last year as his resolution and he told me he felt so much better.

Its not like I eat out a lot, but we do get fast food at least once a month so I would like to take that down to none a month!

I will also cut out the soda/pop/whatever you want to call it. (I say this while drinking a 20 oz Mt Dew.)

I will reflect more on this later!

Last time I did this days two and three were the hardest, but I am determined. And armed with healthy snacks for work.

Good luck!

Julie, I share #1, although I did get better at it last year than ever before, so that's good. And homemade bread rules. I've never mastered #2, so I'm right with you on that... And I love #3! That's awesome. I also fully support #4. Conquer! Conquer!

You're right on in terms of heading over to Kalyn's place for incredible inspiration and delicious recipes -- you'll find everything you need right there, organized by phases! Hang in there, and best wishes with the frugalness of it -- I think that sounds awesome and I'm very inspired by your idea!

Melissa, I took a really good short, private course with a yoga instructor before I left Iowa City on eating mindfully. I'm not practicing it to the level that I'd like to be, but it was so very, very useful and I wish I was more solid at it. Still...it's a great practice to cultivate and a wonderful thing to do. I applaud you!

... as in recording the kind of food and the time I take the food. I just read in a newspaper that logging your food intake can help you be mindful and watch your health. It wasn't on my mind before (throughout my life, I never ever made food-related New Year's goals), but I've been thinking to start in the near future.

1). Ditch my fear of baking bread.

2). Master the concept of portion control.

3). Have people over to dinner at least once a week.

4). Continue my ongoing mission to conquer all my aversions to certain flavors. 2008 was fennel/anise/licorice. 2009 was watermelon. 2010 will be seafood/pasta combos (which I don't hate but never seek out). I want to only dislike food that's poorly made or bad for me ...

I'm determined to lose the baby weight once and for all, so I'm heading back into Phase One of the South Beach Diet. Through a lifetime of trying various approaches to weight management (I was a modern dancer until about 3 or 4 years ago), I found that South Beach, and its approach to carbs, was the most efficient way to go for me personally.

So, I'll be spending a lot of time over at Kalyn's Kitchen ( http://kalynskitchen.blogspot.com/ )! It's an invaluable resource. I do have to modify it a bit, as I'm still nursing and my daughter has a few food sensitivities. Avoiding gluten is a total no-brainer on South Beach, naturally, but eggs are a little trickier. I think every Official South Beach Breakfast that exists involves eggs - I'm going to get a little tired of plain Greek yogurt with Truvia and flaxmeal pretty fast. Other than that, I'm stoked!

My own personal challenge is to do so as frugally as possible, of course!

I think I'm just being more mindful (I write as I blush because my secret resolution is to lose weight via increased fitness).  I'm thinking more about what I put in my mouth, whether my body or soul needs it.  Which means sometimes eating chocolate or potatoes dauphinoise as I'm having for dinner tonight.  Other times, it's mindfulness about how the food got to my plate; where it came from, how far it traveled, whether it's the best choice I could make for the budget I have.
