BlogHer is holding a special pre-conference day this summer called Pathfinder Day on August 4th that will be about helping people reach their blogging goals. Melissa Ford (author of Life from Scratch), Carleen Brice (author of Orange Mint and Honey) and Colleen Lindsay (from Penguin) for the Writing Track on Pathfinder Day. This workshop is for bloggers who want to take their writing (nonfiction or fiction) to the next step.

Even if you're not going to the conference or haven't registered yet for Pathfinder Day (what are you waiting for?), you can still participate from home. There will be liveblogs from the event and we'll be providing a wrap-up post after we get home.

And that's where you come in.

We want to give people at home an equal chance to ask their questions about publishing and get some answers. Please leave you questions in the comment section below -- anything you ever wanted to know about writing and publishing fiction or non-fiction. Some of these questions may be answered at the event, but we'll also be choosing from them to answer afterward in the post.

So what are your questions? It can be about getting started on your idea, finding an agent, proposals, queries, building an audience, whatever. Let us know in the comments.

What's the difference between self-publishing and publishing with a big publishing house in terms of benefits?

1.) If I am writing a sequel to a previously published work (in my case a decades-old film that was based on a book published around the same time), will I run into copyright problems?

2.) Ethically speaking, is it wrong to write something that isn't completely original, using already created and developed characters/storyline? There was a micro-discussion about this on Jezebel, that anything not an original creation falls into the category of "fanfiction" (which is considered an "improper" literary genre)

I'm going to Pathfinder Day, but would love to put a few questions out there beforehand.

- I'd love to write for magazines; short columns and stories. How do I go about finding ones that will take a chance on a blogger?

- How do you pitch yourself to publishing companies if you are new in the business? What can you use to make yourself stand out?

- Do you need to have a specific niche that you write on to get published and asked to write? Or a variety of topics?

Thanks so much!
