For over two years the U.S. economy has been in a downward spiral and there doesn't seem to be any end in sight.  The problems seem inescapable,  and the media coverage is relentless.  Whether it's school budgets being slashed, or unemployment or rising health care costs; nearly everyone is affected one way or another.

Which of the issues about the economy bother you the most?  Do you think there is light at the end of the tunnel? We want to know what the BlogHer community thinks about this mess.  Tell us your opinions on the poll below, and let us know what you think the public officials in D.C. should be doing to help improve the situation.

Why is the Tea party considered "an extreme movement" when the T-E-A stands for taxed enough already? How is that extreme when they want to hold the government accountable for their spending?

Yet the voting lists it in the same vein as "Occupy Wall Street" who camp out illegally and disrupt the local businesses so their customers can't get to them thus helping to destroy the local economy and not just the big businesses on Wall Street. They're also helping to bankrupt the city where the protests are going on to take care of their clean up. Yet the national media thinks they are a wonderful movement.

As a business owner the most worrying aspect is the "not knowing". The regulations are strangling us and we cannot plan or expand as we do not know what is coming down the regulation pike. I have the plans to begin a new business but I dare not, I am not going to risk my hard earned capital in an uncertain business environment.

Jeez. So sad to say, but I think that just about everything of the current economy worries me for our future, but mostly for our children. What will become of us...them? I shudder to think! As for me and my hubby, we'll never be able to retire. So that's that!

HomeRearedChef I was thinking I needed to select like five of these - so I did - and it let me choose all five, lol. Who knew you could select more than one with this poll? We all know it now. :-)

Lol! But you voted, and that is important. I just wonder how loud we can raise our voices to get some attention here. Nah! No-one in the government is listening anyhow. Sigh! Denise

DeniseHomeRearedChef For the record, I can set the poll to either "select all that apply" as I did here, or to "choose one". When I do select all, I usually put it up there for people to know that they can. So after the question it says select all. Like Lays potato chips, sometimes you can't have just one! :)

Hah! I love it! "Sometimes you can't have just one!" Jane Collins Denise

I am concerned about education funding--public education and state colleges and universities are increasingly getting budget slashes that aren't sustainable, aren't changing anything but making education suffer.

Then there is public safety funding. Domestic abuse not prosecuted anyone? argh.

TW It does seem incredibly overwhelming. I think as a nation, everyone longs for something positive we can all rally around. Is there anything non-partisan left that can unite all the people? Maybe if we were attacked by extra terrestrial mutants from another galaxy....

Jane CollinsI have to say that I LOVE your "maybe..." Just perhaps... TW

Jane Collins Ha no. I spend time somewhere mutant aliens are sometimes debated and there are ALWAYS people who are pro-alien annihilation of humans.

TW There's a whole sub-group of humans that want humans to be wiped off the face of the earth. It's sort of a Lemming, mass suicide attitude that I think is very, very strange and the opposite of those who long for a more utopian, Star Trek- like society for the future. Discovery Channel has a show called "Life After People" that explores the environmental side of that whole issue.
