I have my own personal concerns about this topic, many of which match those of others, but I wanted to let some of these conservative bloggers and Twitterers speak out for themselves.
Tracy Karol says that Barack Obama by himself gives her cause to worry. Her blog is extensive and cited reading and outlines the various reasons that make up her dislike. In a post titled "Obama's Education Disasters," Karol outlines causes for concern regarding how Obama will manage education as president:
"When Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, he talked a big game about education reform, even going so far as to say that he and his wife would never be where they are today if they 'weren’t given a chance at education.' While he made sweeping promises in that speech, his past, as usual, doesn’t hold up under scrutiny, and in this instance it’s a story most Americans don’t know and all should."
Doctor, Wife, Mom worries about the Freedom of Choice Act (via Twitter) and believes that the taxpayer should emphatically not be funding abortion. Cassy Fiano writes
"But now that we’ve bailing out the housing market and the UAW, what incentive is there for any other industry to not try and cash in?
The worst part of this, though, is that even more taxpayer money will be used to fund something about half of all Americans find morally reprehensible and are ardently against."
Many conservatives are concerned that Obama will follow through with
his promise of massive defense cuts, ultimately rendering our country unable to defend itself if, God forbid, Obama is tested as Joe Biden strangely prognosticated during the campaign. One of the bright spots of the appointments (beside my lukewarm approval of Hillary Clinton as Madam Secretary) was the holdover of Defense Secretary Robert Gates from the Bush administration, a move I find interesting seeing as so much fuss has been made over Bush's approach to defense.
Still others are concerned about an apparent lack of transparency -
which was made an issue when Obama saw fit to highlight it as a campaign promise. From Decidedly Right:
"President-elect Obama has yet to even take office and already he’s backtracked on numerous campaign promises. With this week’s arrest of Obama ally and Illinois governor, “Hot” Rod Blagojevich, we see ample evidence that Mr. Obama has no intention of having a 'transparent' administration, a promise he trumpeted loudly on the campaign trail."
Red Blooded American Girl questions why Obama, who staunchly defended his 20-year membership at Trinity United Church of Christ, is now at the gym on Sunday mornings:
"Since winning the election, the Obamas have relocated to Washington, D.C., and instead of trying to find another spiritual home, he has chosen to spend his Sundays working out at the gym. While by no means would I expect Obama to spend every waking moment trying to find a new church in his new city, I can’t help but wonder what message his sudden lack of interest in setting aside time for God sends to his two young children. I know what message it sends to me."
I'll tell you what concerns me the most:
The erosion of Second Amendment rights: as a woman who grew up with a grandfather, uncles, and cousins who rode around with gun racks in
their pickup trucks (and as a woman who asked for a .38 special for
Christmas and is well-versed, more than most, with regards to
firearms), I am deeply concerned about the effect an Obama
administration will have on this right. I agree whole-heartedly with
Jacob Sullum who wrote:
"Although the Illinois senator has learned to pay lip service to the Second Amendment, the details of his past and present positions on gun control suggest he neither understands nor respects the right to keep and bear arms."
Based upon his past quotes, it seems Obama ignores the right of self
defense inherent to the Second Amendment. He supports a ridiculous, in my opinion, increase on ammunition tax; he's against concealed carry which has been proven beyond any
