What D'Angelo's Comeback Says to Me About Living My Best Life

I am a big fan of singer D'Angelo. I have been, since he emerged with his first album, Brown Sugar, in the mid-90s. His smooth, instrumentation, soulful vocals, and lyrics of love and life that seem simple until you sit down and think about the emotions that drive them and how they play out in your life... I fell in love with the whole musical package.

By the time his second album, Voodoo, was released in 2000, many had fallen in love with his physical package as well. The singer apparently took some of the five-year hiatus between albums to transform his average Joe physique into a chiseled phenomenon that will forever be etched into the minds of anyone who saw his infamous "Untitled" video.

D'Angelo made a splash on Sunday, showing up to perform on the BET Awards after emerging from the wilderness of lost years that saw him survive a major car accident and battle addictions, demons, and the demands and new-found attention that "the body" thrust upon his life.

I wrote a blog post about D'Angelo's comeback (and other things) earlier this year, when he first embarked on a European tour. The story of D'Angelo made me think then of how we can change our bodies all we want through diet and exercise, but far more important is to change our perceptions of ourselves and our default thought patterns--to basically become a new creation for long-lasting physical and emotional health.
