What everyone needs: an oldie but goodie

And no, I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about five beauty products people seem to have forgotten about. Your mother and grandmother used them. They're still in stores, but they tend to get stashed on the bottom shelf because they're not the hot, trendy products. Well, I'm here to tell you they're worth a second look. They're not sexy, but they're cheap and effective.

Cold cream, specifically Pond's. If you use long-wear foundation or waterproof mascara, you'll need to use an oil-based cleanser to remove it. Sure, you could use something trendier like the cleansing oils from Shu Uemera or DHC--or you could save yourself a lot of money and get some cold cream. Smear it on, tissue it off, and then go over your face with a toner, facial cleansing cloth, or a warm wet washcloth.

Powder Mineral makeup has taken the world by storm, and it is, indeed, great stuff. But my almost daily use of Jergen's Natural Glow moisturizer means my skin is now several shades darker than my darkest foundation. These days I dab on a little concealor and blush and then swipe some translucent pressed powder over my t-zone. It keeps me from looking like a reality show contestant after four days in the jungle.

Lipstick I know, ok? For most of you, it's all gloss all the time. And I understand the appeal of gloss. But I like to keep a tube of lipstick handy for those times when I want my lip color to last more than 10 minutes.

To keep things easy and wearable, I like a my-lips but better shade. Your your-lips-but-better shade is easy to figure out. Just match your lip color to the inside of your lower lip. Go make monkey faces at yourself in the mirror. I'll wait.

Back? OK, the inside of my lower lip is the color of Revlon's Super Lustrous Lipstick in Smoky Rose. So I keep a tube of it handy. I like a 20 minute lip as much as the next makeup fanatic. But sometimes, I just want something that I can put on and go. And this shade is so fool-proof I can apply it without looking--and in doing so, change from Grandma Moses to Angelina Jolie. At least, that's what I like to think.

Rouge I'm not saying you need to get out a rabbit's foot and the pot of bright red clown stuff. (Although this retro line by Bessame is adorable, isn't it?)

I'm just saying that everyone looks better with a little cheek color. The trick is to keep it wearable.

The good news is the oh-so-wearable combination of pink and coral tones of Nars infamous Orgasm blush can now be found at the drugstore.

So if you like the idea of a blush that makes you look rested and glowing, Milani's Luminous is fabulous and cheap. And it's a lot less embarrassing to talk about, too.

Hair dressing cream

OK, everyone is pretty clear on the use of gel, mousse, and spray when they're first styling their hair. But after it's styled, my hair sometimes still needs a little help. I'm not talking about Vitalis or VO-5.

Even though they still have their fans. I'm not that retro.

But when my hair frizzes from humidity or too much sun and chlorine, a pea-sized amount of TRESemmé Anti-Frizz Secret Smoothing Crème

takes me from Don King to Jennifer Anniston in five seconds.

(Please note: no celebrities were harmed in the production of this post. Even though I cited Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Anniston in the space of a few paragraphs.)

he mere mention of rouge makes me think of my mother...happy thought there.  I agree I don't feel "finished" until I set my makeup with power.  I am Bare Minerals girl myself, but I can't just do gloss...need my lipstick too!

We were taling about my grandmother and cold cream the other day. She had very nice skin. She used abolene cream. We were wondering if they even sold cold cream anymore. Might have to look into it.

I still use pressed powder to set my make-up for the day. I don't have time for playing with my make up.  Once it's on, it has to stay on until I take it off - and that's many many hours later...I lovingly refer to my make-up as bullet proof ;-)

As far as the frizzy hair - I use a small amount of conditioner that I leave in my hair. I use a frizz control gel before I dry my hair, and then I smooth it  with a light spray of Pantene classic flexible hold. Hair is soft, but stays in place.

Thanks for sharing your tips too!
