What makes a patriot?

This Fourth of July comes after a news-frenzied June, during which the world spent a lot of time pondering democracy, patriotism and independence -- from election-related violence in Iran to a new independence day in Iraq after the pullout of U.S. combat troops from its cities.

Before firing up the grill and heading to the fireworks, BlogHer's contributing editors are taking a minute to ponder the meaning of patriotism in the United States:

From a liberal perspective, Erin Kotecki Vest notes, This 4th We're All Patriots. No, Really."

In her post "What Patriotism Means to Me," conservative blogger Dana Loesch gives some love to military families.

And with a third perspective, Suzanne Reisman wrote "Abigail Adams and Why I Eat the Fourth of July" -- on why she doesn't celebrate the holiday at all.

How are you celebrating the day this year? What does patriotism mean to you?

their sacrifice is huge and thanks is very small. I hate it when the government throws them under the bus.

I think to understand where we are-- we have to look back at where we have been. A lot of people gave all they had for our precious freedoms.

Our founding fathers were moral forward thinkers who understood capitalism is the way to prosperity, not socialism. Don't get me wrong in thinking they weren't charitable...a lot of them gave everything (from money, land and lives) for the freedom we enjoy now.

If we are going to prosper. We have to keep these things in mind.
