What’s Your BlogHer ’12 Follow Up Strategy?

After all the parties are over, you’ve traveled home, and recovered from re-entry into regular life, what’s next? What is your plan to follow-up on the connections you made and put what you learned into action?

It’s all in the follow-up.  Whenever you attend a live event it is only a start to the work that will follow. You’ve made some new connections, deepened existing relationships, and learned a ton.  So what are you going to do with it?

Here is a –4-part system for taking action without overwhelming the heck out of yourself.

Prioritize

You likely left the event with an unwieldy stack of business cards.  Hopefully you were making notes along the way so you’ll be able to jog your memory regarding when you met someone and what you talked about.  You can’t possible make meaningful connection with everyone the Monday following the conference.  Triage your stack of cards based on the priority.  Do so by asking:

  • Which connections most directly relate to achieving my goals? For example, if you spoke with people interested in hiring you, by all means they go to the top of the pile. Or, if you made a connection with your dream brand or ideal collaborator, reach out to them first.
  • Who did you make the richest connections with?  Whether or not they are directly related to achieving your goals, if you hit it off with someone, put these folks next on your priority list.

Reach out
Depending on the conversation you had with someone, your outreach will be different.  Some warrant a phone call or personal email.  For others, you may want to follow them online and simply start to learn more about them for a potentially deeper connection in the future.

Take Action
Knowledge is useless without action. Nothing will change in your business or blog unless you start to implement what you’ve learned.  It’s not what you KNOW, it’s what you DO with what you know.  Is there something you need to learn? Support you need to hire? A tactic you need to execute?

Review your list of takeaways from the conference (you DO have one, right?)  Prioritize based on which ones excite you the most or will bring you the best results in the shortest amount of time.

Pace Yourself
I don’t know about you but I’m exhausted after the conference. You traveled, took in a ton of information, talked to a lot of people, and partied.  Staying up later than usual and getting up early, you need some time to rejuvenate as well.  Be sure to book some recovery time into your schedule.

In terms of taking action, you might have a long list but you can’t do everything at the same time.  Pick 3 items to take action on in the next 30-60 days.

Life and business are all about relationships. Nourish them always and make sure you put taking care of yourself on that list as well. Pace yourself because relationships take time and implementing the things you learned is a journey, not a destination.
