What is in a smell?

Today in a group, I made popcorn for my residents who have
AD,  It was amazing to see how they
perked up with the smell of popcorn in the air.
It is just one more tool that we can use to help people with AD connect
and reminisce.  It made me want to look up
the top five smells in the world in order to use them as a tool.  After searching the internet, I came up with
my own list.  Starting with number five,
baked goods, Christmas trees, fresh laundry, cinnamon and the top recognized
smell would be coffee.  I can use these
specific smells in group in order to start conversations with the
residents.  After doing some research, I
found that there has been research done on Alzheimer’s patients and the
inability to identify 10 specific odors (derived from the broader study) proved
to be the best predictors for Alzheimer's Disease: strawberry, smoke, soap,
menthol, clove, pineapple, natural gas, lilac, lemon and leather.  Isn’t it fascinating the way the brain and
nose work together?  Enjoy the smells you
can take in and share it with your loved one.

Janet~  Thank you so much for your response.  I love getting feedback from my blogs.  I enjoyed looking over your website.  i loved the listening section!  What a great website. I am always so impressed to see personal websites that just stand out.

I currently work at an Assisted Living and we focus on a new music genre every month.  I think you are right on the lifetime connection people have with music.

Thanks for the response.

Have a wonderful day! Kim

Isn't it interesting the way the brain works in conjunction with the senses?  Part of my business is providing Music Wellness sessions in memory care facilities.  A song such as  'Londonderry Air (Oh Danny Boy)' truly ignites the memories of the people.  Not only do they remember the words and sing along, hum along and/or move to the music, they share stories and memories that the song brings up for them.  For more information, check out my site http://www.janetroper.com/wellness.htm.

Thanks for sharing your interesting post.

Harmony,
