Those who experience social anxiety or shyness are uncomfortable and can become inhibited during social interaction, which can interfere with the development of friendships and relationships. They may appear socially awkward to some and have a tendency to not utilize the full complement of their social and communication skills in their daily interactions.  They can be preoccupied with negative feelings, blame themselves for their state of being, and typically have mistaken beliefs about themselves and the people around them.

Symptons of social anxiety and shyness such as extreme nervousness, passiveness and anxiety tend to arise during face to face interactions in a group setting, meeting new people, or talking with a person of the opposite sex.  A shy person can be, but are not always an introvert.  An introvert is a person who likes to do things on their own, rather than in a group situation, but could have good social skills.  A shy person does not  have good social and communication skills but would like to do things with others.

How to Recognize Social Anxiety and Shyness

The hallmark of a  social anxiety or a shy person is that they may exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Passive and pessimistic.
  • Nods frequently instead of verbalizing
  • Quiet and Reserve
  • Lack of emotion in voice and gestures
  • Inaudible or speak softly
  • Does not initiate conversation or approach other people
  • Appears to have have low energy or enthusiasm
  • Takes time to process information and has difficulty verbalizing

Physical Symptoms of Social Anxiety and Shyness

  • Racing heartbeat
  • Nervous
  • Sweating
  • Blushing
  • Tension
  • Forgetfulness
  • Feeling of “butterflies”
  • Anxious
  • Restless

Reasons People Experience Social Anxiety and Shyness

Social anxiety or shyness may arise because, among other things, they:

  • Have a negative perception of themselves or low esteem
  • Fear they will embarrass themselves by what they say or how they say something
  • Have Mistaken beliefs about themselves
  • Lack a belief they have anything meaningful to say
  • Don’t possess a positive or upbeat attitude
  • Are unable to be relaxed in a social situation
  • Failed to develop or practice social and communication skills
  • Focus too much on themselves instead of the other person
  • Possess a predisposition in their personality trait
  • Experienced cultural influences
