Recently, my mind seems to frequently return to the name of this blog, and what it means.
So I wanted to share with you how I chose the name WordVessel as the title of this blog.
WORD:
Those of you who have followed WordVessel regularly since its inception in October 2008 know that this blog arose out of my journey into the world of writing. So I wanted the name to have something to do with words or writing.
But there is also kind of a play on words at work here. For me, when I hear "word," my first thought is of Jesus. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1, NIV) "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." (John 1:14a, NIV) The Word lives inside of me.
The second thing I think about when I hear "word" is God's word, the Bible. As much as is humanly possible, I desire to present the truth of God's word. "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105, NIV) More than anything else, our world needs light. My prayer is that I will allow Jesus to shine His light through me.
VESSEL:
Many of you also know my heart's desire to make God known--not only in my writing, but in everything I do. It was important to me that the name of this blog demonstrate my desire to serve Christ.
A couple of verses on this:
"But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power my be of God, and not of us." ~2 Corinthians 4:7, KJV God has entrusted me with the treasure of His good news. Though I am just an "earthen vessel" (the NIV calls us "jars of clay"), God's power resides in me. I want that treasure and that power to be evident to all.
"Yet, O LORD, You are our Father. We are the clay, You are the potter; we are all the work of Your hand." ~Isaiah 64:8, NIV I never want to be guilty of telling the Potter how I will allow Him to use me. Instead, I want to be a vessel available to be used for His purposes. If He chooses to use me through my writing, so be it. If He chooses to use me in some other way, so be it. This vessel belongs to Him.
In closing this post, I want to let WordVessel readers know what a blessing you've been to me. As I started this blog, I wanted to be a blessing to others. I hope I have been. But I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that I feel far more blessed by you and your encouragement. Thank you!
May this vessel's words point to the Word!
