Tonight at dinner, my six-year-old son said, "Okay, so tomorrow is Wednesday!" And my husband laughed and said, "No, buddy, tomorrow is TUESDAY. It's still Monday."
And my son said, "HOW is that POSSIBLE???"
I'm wondering the same thing.
This has been a long week already, after one day; it's the kind of week where I really just want to lose myself in the New Arrivals section of J. Crew and come home with an optimistic new wardrobe of spring pieces in fresh, happy colors!
Except for that whole thing where I'm not shopping. And also the other whole thing where we're in the last stages of decorating our living room. And that final thing we like to call The Tax Bill.
More than all that, though, is the knowledge that buying stuff -- any stuff, but particularly a bunch of clothes that I do not need and may not ever wear -- won't actually make this week any shorter or brighter or less stressful. Instead, I've been rooting around in my bathroom for something that will make me feel a little happier and prettier and more optimistic about ... well, everything.
I've unearthed a few things that are already taking the edge off. And no, none of them needs to be elaborately uncorked first. Although that's always good too.
Origins Spring Fever: This is my absolute favorite scent. I'm a clean, citrusy kind of girl, and I've been wearing this for years. In the winter, I swap it out for Clinique's Happy, which is lighter and less bothersome when it lingers on my sweaters, but I'm ready for spring and just a spritz makes me feel like we're almost there. $37.00 for 1.7 oz at Origins.
Terralina Body Lotion: This is definitely in the SPLURGE category, but it's less of a splurge than, say, a new dress. Terralina's lotion has a light, creamy texture, and smells like tea cakes -- it's perfect after a pre-bedtime bath. $28.00 for 8 ounces at Terralina.com.
Bliss Lemon + Sage Body Butter: I carry this in my handbag and slather it on every single time I wash my hands. It's rich and moisturizing and lightweight all at once, and the light lemony fragrance is a nice pick-me-up. Best stuff EVER for hands -- it's like having a tiny spa in your bag. $35.00 for 8.5 ounces at Bliss (but I found a much smaller tube for $12.00 at a local makeup boutique -- perfect for my handbag).
Essie nail polish in Sugar Daddy: A great neutral pink nail polish is a terrific pick-me-up; even if you're schlepping around in your yoga pants and a ball cap, pretty nails can make you feel better about the world. Or maybe that's just me. Essie has some great pink neutrals in long-lasting formulas, for virtually nothing -- I take mine with me to the salon when I get a manicure. Essie nail polish in Sugar Daddy, $9.00 (although I think I paid less at Target, honestly).
