Parents of Special Ed kids are used to fighting.  We fight for our kids to receive services, to not be “left behind”, and for them to succeed.  Most the time we run into obstacles created by the schools.  I hope the following information is a help.

During my most recent fight with our school administration I discovered a fabulous bit of technology that I can’t wait to share with you.  This is something your school will not tell you about and you may have to fight to get it but it will make huge changes possible for your children.

My discovery?  The Alpha Smart Neo.  On the surface it looks like any old word processor but it is so much more.  Let me tell you why…

My son has severe learning disabilities that affect his decoding and processing skills.  He has trouble spelling, writing, reading.  School has been torturous for him, and for us.  A friend of a friend told me about the Alpha smart Neo and I investigated.  Wow…what had my child been missing out on???!!!

The Alpha Smart Neo  is the size of a small laptop with amazing capabilities.  It can be loaded with software to help children with learning disabilities in school.  After the normal “fight” with my son’s school, and more testing, he qualified for the Alpha smart Neo.

My son’s Alpha Smart Neo came loaded with software geared specifically to his learning disabilities.  There is a program that offers suggestions for him to choose from for any misspelled word.  It helps with grammar and pronunciation.  He can save and edit all his work and print whatever needs to be turned in to the teacher.  The is also a fun program that teaches him how  to type.   And it looks like a laptop so it is instantly cool to the other kids.

So, why don’t the schools tell us about the Alpha Smart Neo?  My theory is money and time.  It costs money to by the equipment, load the program, test our kids, train the testers and train people to teach our kids the basic functions of the Neo.

To say the Alpha smart Neo has been life changing is not a stretch.  My son does not dread writing assignments, or homework in general.  He is not as fearful about not being able to complete work in class.  And he is  much less intimidated by spelling.  He is spelling and reading better than ever.  He is getting great grades on writing assignments.  These are prayers that Special Ed parents rarely have answered.

And no, this is not an ad for Alpha Smart Neo.  Just  a mom reporting from the battlefield of Special Education.  Keep fighting, and God bless the creators of Alpha smart Neo!
