Another day, another automotive recall. It is getting to the place where you’re almost afraid to drive your vehicle. Over the past few months, Toyota has recalled over 8 million vehicles and now Honda and GM have each recalled over 1 million vehicles. You have to ask - what is up with all of these recalls?

You’ve heard of misery loves company? That likely is the situation here. Toyota’s reputation has taken a beating over the past few weeks as all of the news has focused on what Toyota knew about unintended acceleration problems in its vehicles and when they knew it. Other automakers see this as an opportunity to recall their problems vehicles while the glare of public scrutiny is squarely on Toyota. By announcing recalls now, they deflect direct public attacks on them.

So what does this mean for you? It means that if you are driving a recalled vehicle, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the recall, which means you should receive some type of notice (likely a letter) with instructions on bringing your vehicle into the dealership for repair. Don’t ever ignore these notices. They usually involve some type of safety issue and you don’t want to risk an accident.

If you think you have a recalled vehicle, but haven’t received a notification, visit www.recalls.gov which is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) site for all recalls. There you can click on a list to search by vehicle or equipment manufacturer and/or model. This site also lists other automotive equipment recalls including child safety seats, tires and school buses.

Remember, the vast majority of vehicles are the road today are very safe. Recalls are issued to ensure that any problem that may cause a safety issue is repaired to specific regulations to protect you and your loved ones.
