What's In A Name? A Lot When You Want To See It In Print

Once upon a time, when I was about eight years old, I decided I wanted to star in my own romance novel. I had been reading a lot and thought they were cool, and I could never find books where any of the characters, let along the main one, had my name. We had writing sessions every day at school, and I thought that this would clearly be a perfect opportunity. What our teacher didn't tell us about those writing sessions is that she would selecting and reading some out loud. I wasn't there the day she read mine but I certainly heard about it after the fact, and I still cringe when I think about it. I was mortified. It was years before I would share any of my stories ever again. I still don't like writing fiction and I put it all back to that moment. If only I had been aware that you could get books customized to star you and your friends.

Prom and PrejudiceI was totally unaware that these books existed when I was a kid. The peak of coolness was really getting pencils that had your full name stamped on them (which I never did and I'm still somewhat bitter about and should just order myself some already). I've been aware for many years now that you could get children's books customized with a child's name, and I've even seen kiosks for them in some malls. I've considered buying one for a friend of mine who can never find anything with her name on it, something that irritated her when we were kids. But the discovery that you can get novels customized -- novels! -- kind of blew my mind. I mean, sure, I can create my own blog, write my own stories and generally plaster my name across the internet if I want, but to have a novel with name in it? WOW!

While you can get several different kinds of novels customized, including romances (even a Nascar-inspired one) and mysteries, the new teen line of these customizable novels from Books By You that really caught my attention. The teen line offers three options; one that is Pride and Prejudice inspired but centers around the high school prom, another that would be a hit for fans of Twilight and a third option that delves into werewolf territory and I suspect is a bit of a play on the Jack the Ripper mystery.

When I first looked at these I started to giggle. Who wouldn't want to star in their own version of Pride and Prejudice? I read the book for the first time when I was 10 or 11, and I have very fond memories of watching the BBC mini-series with my mother when I was in high school. More than 15 years after it was released, Colin Firth as Fitwilliam Darcy still makes me swoon. If in my tweens or teens someone had offered me to customize a copy of the story for myself, like you can with Prom and Prejudice, I would have jumped at the chance. Heck, I'm seriously thinking about jumping at the chance now. It's been weeks since I've found this site and I've been pondering what characteristics I'd give the perfect Mr. Darcy, because yes, I can choose his physical characteristics. Well, most of them at least. Unfortunately you don't seem to be able to choose skin color or race. Also unfortunate is that you don't get to pick who plays the evil villain Wickham. I have a few ex-boyfriends that I'd like have star in that role. Oh, or Mr. Collins. Yes, immortalizing one of them as Mr. Collins would fill me with much glee.

I think the reason that this book service, and others like it, is so brilliant is that so many of us get a thrill out of seeing our names in print. While my name is not uncommon (I went to school with at least four other Karens), there never seemed to be be very many Karens in the books I read. So strong was my desire to see identify with someone with my name beyond my community, I once chose to a do biography project on someone in elementary school because their first name was Karen. It happened to be Karen Kain, then a principal dancer at the National Ballet of Canada. After reading it one of my

I'm passing this on to my friends with teen/tweens. And, uh, my mom. Heh.

I think it's always a little weird but it would be more weird to see it in that situation.

I think that's a good criteria for judging a names book. ;)

What are the odds that you would both have the same names as the author's dogs?

Great topic for a blog!

I never see my name in anything because it`s so weirdly spelled, so when I got the first season of Dynasty it was super-weird to see my name right there on the birthday cake in the very first scene.

Ha, I wonder if that`s why I became a journalist? Because subconsciously I was annoyed that I didn't see it in any books?

On a side note, I used to evaluate baby name books by whether they included my name as a variation of Crystal, etc.

There's a fairly well know book that shares my name in the title (although spelled differently), Marley and Me. Interestingly enough this book is about a man and his dog named Marley. His first dog? It's name was Shawn. Guess what my husband's name is? Shawn. I figure that's a pretty good sign we're meant to be. ;-)

By the way, my site is called NamelyMarly because I LOVE the topic of names. I even have a podcast where I interview people about their names. It's SO fun!

Right now he's into anything with cars/trucks or dinosaurs which those books are not about. I pull them out occasionally though.

I don't use pencils but since my sister teaches and her students never seem to have them they make a great gift for her.

You see variations of Elizabeth - Beth, Liz, Liza, Betty, etc. alot but not Elizabeth as much unless it's historical.

There are lots of options in the romance and mystery sections too. ;)

Do you think it would disconcert you as much if you had a more common name?

Swears that when she has kids they are going to have a common name because she hated not being able to find anything with her name on it. I think she probably had some special customized stuff at one point but they went on trips a lot as a kid and her younger brother could always find stuff with his name on it. She thought it was really unfair.

Aw, I love that her brother needs to be included in the Veggie Tales. That's awesome.

There aren't a lot of Margaret's because they always go by some shortened form. My sister's name is Margaret and she doesn't even go by it. Margaret Atwood doesn't even go by Margaret in her personal life!

And doesn't it always seem that Margaret's are always the mean old aunt? So unfair.

I think books with the child's name are a great gift.

I love the personalized pencils. Ever now and then I think about ordering some for myself but I really never use pencils.

Hmmm I've always thought of Elizabeth as a fairly common name in books but maybe they've all be historical. I'm going to be thinking about that all day now!

I do think these would make a great gift for the right person.

when book characters have my name and I have only seen side characters with my name and it disconcerts me.

I definitely would hate a Pride and Prejudice or Twilight starring me.

and was never printed on anything; conversely, my sister's name was very common at the time and could be purchased on anything---like those mini license plates for your bike. You brought me back by mentioning the pencils. My grandmother was extremely sensitive to my plight, and always ordered pencils with my name on them for the beginning of school. I also have personalized Christmas ornaments and an ID bracelet from her. That was a way for her to show love.

Regarding books, my brother-in-law purchased a series of VeggieTale books with my daughter's name in them, and she ate them up. (In fact, we have to alter them when we read them aloud, to include her younger brother's name too, lest he be left out.)

Margaret tends to be an old-lady name in books, so I don't really seek my own name when I'm looking for the next good read. Often, there's a Maggie or a Meg, but few include the full, formal "Margaret". However, I, too, would be a willing crack whore in any Atwood novel ;-).

Actually I think he has 2, both given as gifts when he was born.

We always got personalized pencils from our grandmother as a 1st day of school gift. They came from Lillian Vernon and had the personalized pencil bag too. I bought some for my sister since she's a teacher a few years ago at Christmas.

A novel though - featuring me? Cool. There aren't a lot of Elizabeth's in the book world unless you're talking historical stuff. I might just have to check this out.

I love this idea! And it's a great idea for my friend's b-day present! Also, I know a few of my friends who would love to be potrayed as crack whore by Margaret Atwood...
