What's Tougher Than Training for the Olympics? Staying a Virgin

BlogHer Original Post

American hurdler Lolo Jones is no stranger to the media. The gorge athlete with rocking abs has appeared on plenty of magazine covers and was even photographed naked for ESPN's The Body Issue. But none of the media exposure is anything compared to the firestorm surrounding Jones' pronouncement this week that she is a virgin.

In an interview with HBO's "Real Sports," the U.S. Olympian revealed that she and is waiting to have sex until marriage. She also said that remaining a virgin is a greater challenge than training for two Olympics.

"It's just something, a gift I want to give my husband," Jones told HBO's Mary Carillo. "But please understand that this journey has been hard... it's the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. Harder than training for the Olympics. Harder than graduating from college."

Jones knows what she is talking about. The 29-year-old LSU grad has been training 12 years for a race that will be over in 12 seconds. She is looking for redemption this summer at the London Games, four years after coming up short of the gold as the favorite in the 100-meter hurdles in Beijing. She's had dates tell her that sex will make her run faster (that's clever guys) but as much as she wants to win, it's still a line she won't cross.

Jones is not the only celeb touting her virginity. Another high profile athlete waiting to have sex is New York Jets star Tim Tebow (the “Virgin Quarterback”) and who could forget the Jonas Brothers‘ promise rings? While Jones' Christian faith certainly factors into her decision to abstain,  I wonder how much her PR team influenced her decision to go public? She's probably not the only virgin on Team USA but right now, she's the most famous. Since athletes compete for sponsorship dollars, particularly in an Olympic year, will a higher profile help her marketing strategy?

btw - @lolojones is one of the most active, and entertaining athletes on Twitter. She relentlessly laments her lack of a love life, shares personal details about her travel and training schedules and even fields marriage proposals.

Any thoughts about her decision to go public with her sex life (or lack thereof)?
