Research shows that the Sci Fi genre is not as successful with women as other types of movies.  Really?  The new J.J. Abrams Sci Fi adventure Super 8 premiered this weekend with a fabulous young cast (think E.T. meets Stand by Me) and was #1 at the box office.  I'm pretty sure more than a few women helped put it there.  What about the BlogHer community?  Do you like Sci Fi or loathe it?  Do you have a favorite?  Tell us about it on the Opinion Poll.  And don't forget, you can write in your choice or your comments now, so please tell us what you think! When the Matrix came out it was too freaky for my youngsters to watch. I love Keanu Reeves so I think it is time to give it a whirl.

There have been several good (and several not so good) Star Trek films from the original cast, the Next Generation cast and now the most recent reboot.

Will Smith has done a bunch. Men In Black was a hoot. Independence Day was a great "lets get those nasty aliens" movie. I, Robot and I am Legend (based on the same book as The Omega Man) were pretty cool, too.

Dune anyone, especially Sting in just his underpants?

This summer, I'm looking forward to Cowboys and Aliens. Daniel Craig with his shirt off, dressed as a cowboy, beating up on aliens? Sounds like a blast!

I said Star Wars (the Original) but that's just one of many! All Star Wars', all Star Trek's, Stargate the Original Movie just to name a few. They are all incredible!

It appears that much of the BlogHer community is enraptured by Sci-Fi movies. I am so excited about Cowboys and Aliens, just saw another great trailer for it at Super 8 (which was also wonderful). J.J. Abrams is taking the baton from Steven Spielberg for spectacular Sci Fi movies (not that my revered Mr. S. should be ready to pass it along quite yet...may he live and work forever). I agree that the latest Star Trek was incredible, and can't wait for the next one in 2012.

I'm a Star Trek fan, since I was 16 years old so I've seen them all, tv and motion pictures - love the Star Trek re-imagine film of last year and look forward to the next one in 2012. However, Serenity was magic. I'm really looking forward to Aliens and Cowboys...it just looks different. And I'm a fan of the 2nd in the Aliens movies...Ripley just plain kicked butt in that one. I love scifi.

Zardoz!!!!! My husband's favorite. I can't wait to tell him someone else likes that movie. I find it a bit too hippy dippy trippy in parts.

Forbidden Planet

My personal favorite- because of Robbie the Robot -and I really like that it feels like a proto Star Trek episode.

Such a classic. There are so many that I absolutely love, but Forbidden Planet is just so proto-meta-classic!

OMG I forgot about Zardoz Gena, thanks for the reminder. It was so quirky and strange. I remember being transfixed by Sean Connery's loin cloth thingee as well. Good call!

I've seen every movie up there and love each one for different reasons. I can't choose a favorite, but I used to know the first Matrix movie almost by heart. And I could easily add more such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original and remakes), Independence Day (for the shear corniness), The original version of The Day the Earth Stood Still, several in the Star Trek franchise, Brother from Another Planet, and the first Frankenstein movie. People forget that Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, a woman and the author of the novel Frankenstein, is often credited as essentially starting the modern science fiction genre with that story.

That is one of my husband's favorite movies, and just another one to tack on to my growing list. :)

These movies are right up there with the Alien series for me. But let's not forget the old stuff too, and how could I ever...? The Invisible Man! Although my kids make fun of me. I guess I can see why, but I still like the old movies. Oh-yeah...

How can I pick from:

The Day The Earth Stood Still
Forbidden Planet
Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan
Babarella (Goofy but yeah...why not?)
or 1974's Zardoz with Sean Connery in a leather diaper, panty, thongish kinda loin cloth?

I will not pay one cent to see a 'chick-flick' in a movie theater, but I will shell out with both hands to see the latest Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie. But I like so many of these movies, it's difficult to pick just one. Here's a few that I love:

The Fifth Element
Any Star Trek movie
Serenity(and the TV show, Firefly)
Galaxy Quest
Aliens
The Thing(still scary after many viewings!)

Henry, I used to be obsessed with The Queen of Outer Space (1958) which is a black and white sci fi classic where women rule Venus and capture a bunch of astronauts from Earth. It's dumber than a bag full of rocks but I could watch it a hundred times. Classics rule!

I have to comment on my own post with two extreme sci-fi favorites:

1) Close Encounters of the Third Kind: pretty much cemented my opinion that Steven Spielberg was a movie-making God. I considered it nearly a religious experience. And how did he get French movie making great Francois Truffaut to star as an actor in a sci fi movie?

2) Galaxy Quest: Sci Fi comedies form a weird niche. I'm not always sure they always work, but this one was a winner on every level. They spoofed my beloved Star Trek and got away with it. Loved the cast too.

I thought the new J.J. Abrams version of Star Trek with Zach Quinto and Chris Pine was brilliant. Abrams has completely refreshed and rejuvenated the franchise. Also, now that I've seen "Super 8" this weekend, I think he must really, really like his mom. Many of his movies feature characters who are devoted to their mothers (like Spock in Star Trek).

Logan's Run was the 1st science fiction movie I ever saw. We were living in Juba, Sudan and it was shown at the UN compound one night. Scared me but definitely got me started with sci-fi books and movies.

I wouldn't ever say it was the best sci-fi movie but it holds a special place in my heart and memories.

I adore Fifth Element, Skye. I wanted to put it on the poll, but there were just too many great sci-fi movies to get them all in there. Thanks for adding this one. One of the best Bruce Willis movies, IMHO.

I don't think The Fifth Element is the *best* sci-fi movie, but it's definitely my favorite.

I believe Event Horizon was the best sci-fi movie ever made with Laurence Fishbourne and Sam Neill. It still gives me goose bumps when I watch it...
