What's Your Internet Pet Peeve?

One of the many things I love about the new BlogHer redesign is that there is nothing at the top of the page that downloads so slowly that it makes the page jump when everything finally arrives. My pet peeve with the Internet of late is things that jump around just when I'm trying to click them.

Here's what I'm talking about.

Another problem I've seen lately while pages download and fill with content that may or may not move around is that you lose control of the scroll bar. You can't scroll at all sometimes, or if you can it is not with precision. Like this example.

Ronni at Time Goes By calls it Twitching Through the News.

It has become impossible to read news online without developing something like attention deficit disorder or worse, stopping your brain from functioning altogether. Some examples:

Just try reading the headlines on the home page of the Washington Post. Suddenly the text jerks up or down and you've lost your place. The reason is that at the top of the left column, the paper rotates a series of photos with captions. Because the the captions are of different length, the switch pushes the column up and down, up and down twisting your brain like a pretzel.

I don't want you to think I'm picking on Yahoo! and The Huffington Post specifically. I could find many other examples of the same thing on the Web right now. It's an epidemic of jumpitis.

The other day I got so upset I posted A Rant on the Future of News on my own blog, saying that at least print news held still!

Pet peeves are popular. On BlogHer, oviedostyle talked about her Social Media Pet Peeves. Sarah and the Goon Squad ranted about several things (like music) in My Blog Pet Peeve a while back.

What's your Pet Peeve

What is the one thing that drives you crazy about visiting a web site? What makes the content hard to reach? What drives you away faster than anything? What irritates you but doesn't actually drive you away screaming? Do tell.

I have multiple sites open at once, always, so sometimes I can't even tell where it's coming from. And I may listen to my own music on my computer, shocker! So DON'T start playing music when I come to your site. Especially if you're going to put the off switch halfway down the sidebar or in the footer.

I agree...and I also hate it when I'm sitting in silence and then something on the page (usually an ad) starts talking (LOUD).

I can't stand clicking on a link that promises a 'free' service, only to then be taken to a site requiring payment for a 'trial' basis. Drives me batty.

Pop up ads....they make me disgruntled...but the pop-up blocker helps with that.

I don't like having to search for information...pages that are completely crowded with information make me grumpy.

My biggest internet pet peeve is those adverts on the sides of pages that automatically expand to 5x their size when you accidentally move the mouse over them. Sometimes, they won't even go back to their normal size after you move the mouse away. Most of them do not have a 'close' function, so I'm stuck refreshing the page to try to get to the text I WANTED to read. I know that adverts are necessary on pages, but I HATE the ones that expand!
