Sparkle (0)
During my sophomore year of college I became quite smitten with a boy. The day he met me I was wearing a pink plaid button down shirt from American Eagle and over that a pink sweater with a hood from Hollister. He told a mutual friend of mine that I was a) gorgeous and b) I looked amazing in pink. Since then pink has been my color of choice.
"But, Heather? What does this have to do with style?" Well it has to do with style because not
only has pink been my color of choice but also because when it comes to dressing myself I like to make sure there's a little pop of color somewhere in my outfit. While I might not dress exquisitely (I believe it's in the eye of the beholder and I still feel as if I'm learning how to dress myself properly) I do experiment and make an attempt to see what works and what doesn't work.
I know that besides color, I love to be comfortable. I try to get my hand on as many pairs of ballet flats as my credit card will allow. I like boots in the winter paired with tights. I like belts. I love dresses. I really love my pearls. But I do like to shock others with something different and dangly every now and then.
I was recently asked to contribute to a style blog because the editors of this blog found me to be stylish. Oh, really? I, the girl who infamously wore a skirt with anatomically correct drawings on it? Or even better, the girl who left the house wearing boots with a heel and a dress with a skirt so short that everyone could see everything? Of course the "porn skirt" has become a joke and one of my favorite pieces and the dress with tights and boots inspired my coworker to do the same.
I work in a very conservative environment that involves a lot of black attire and suits but I still like to be me. So I might punch up a black dress with a wide pink belt. Or wear pink, suede pointy shoes with ruffles with my suit. But I always try to be comfortable and myself. Last week Rebecca Woolf said it best, "And this is why I love fashion. So subjective."
I believe that true style comes when you are comfortable in what you are wearing and yet willing to sometimes step outside of your normal ensemble to see what else might work. And if it doesn't work that's OK but the main thing about style is to no matter what, you should feel like you.
And that, my friends, is why I haven't worn a suit in three years.
Speaking of style, are are a few of my favorite stylish ladies. Please add your favorites in the comments:
