[Editor's Note: Have you ever fallen in love with a blog, met the blogger, and simply became more smitten with the words? Because Beccarama explains what happens when the opposite occurs -- you like the blog but the blogger... not so much. --Mel]

But when I met her at BlogHer she was beyond dismissive. There were brighter lights to stand near and she clearly had an agenda in mind for that day – and it was all about getting to some very big non-blog fish. I get that. But it totally changed my view of her and her blog. I still read it when a tweet or FB post grabs my eye but I don’t participate in her community. I also don’t respond to her fairly regular calls to action on her behalf – voting, entering giveaways, retweeting, etc. I realized that while her blog is about bigger picture issues, she herself (at least to me) is all about promoting herself.

Beccarama's post is a great wake-up call since lots of people will be meeting face-to-face this summer at conferences (so be sure to read Beccarama's post in full). Have you ever experienced this? What did you do?

I read once that it's never good to meet those who's work you admire. It will leave you flat in the long run. I think that and the fact that my travel is limited has pevented me from meeting those who's blogs I enjoy.

I think sometimes bloggers are overwhelmed and really busy at these conferences and don't intend to be dismissive. I remember that some of my favorite bloggers seemed a bit standoff-ish when I met them at BlogHer 2009, but they were wonderful when I met them at a private event later. I'm glad I didn't let me first impression change my opinion of them. Many of gone on to become friends. It always pays to give others the benefit of the doubt.

Hmmm, maybe I'll continue to write to be read and not seen. Such an introvert I am:)

I am one of those people that always worries about opening my mouth. I always try to be me, speak the truth but with caution. I don't want to offend anyone if I can help it. And yet I still worry that someone may immediately dislike like me. I am what you see.

I love this post because it helps ALL of us remember to keep ourselves in check.

absolutely! it has happened with a few bloggers that I've met and really has made me cautious now. and sometimes it makes me want to call them out on twitter too because their real life persona does NOT match with their blog personality!

The only concern I have with this thought process is that I hope people don't think that about me. Not that I'm a big fish at all. Or that I care if you're a big fish or a small fish. But my social anxiety sometimes washes over me and I get blinders on and avoid eye contact and think to myself, "OMG! I CANNOT BREATHE! PEOPLE! LOTS OF PEOPLE!" I think anyone that reads my blog understands that though. I just worry about turning off new people who don't really know me.

I have never meet you but I definitely can't think of people thinking that way of you especially from reading your posts :)

I also know how hard it is to meet people for the first time - I discovered that since we moved here...I know there is an anxiety to it and understand the can't breathe part. I found just taking a deep breath helps and then let the conversation flow.

Sigh, it almost sounds like blogging is... cliche-ish, which I am learning...

I introduced myself to about 50 bloggers at blogher last year. All were cordial. All (except for two) continued on their way without indicating that I was welcome to join them. That is why I am not going to blogher this year.

I'm not sure it is just competitiveness though. There are people who Blog as a BRAND. That brand does not equal THEM as a Person. I Know Lots of bloggers who get External Kudos, but as Human beings? Let's just say I would rather spend my time with people I enjoy.
