When in Doubt, Ask a
Question

The average person asks 250 questions a day. Okay, I just made up that fact, but seriously, you can see how it could be true. Questions are the most basic way of admitting what we don't know (but wish we did) as well as showing interest in another person. When readers ask us questions on our comment section, it tells the writer that they're trying to get a better understanding of the ideas presented in the post. And when we ask questions of our readers, what we're doing is opening up a conversation.

Questions are also the perfect way to connect with readers when you can't think of anything to write.

People do it in numerous ways -- sometimes they solicit questions from readers; letting readers know that they're willing to answer any question the reader has been wondering about. Of course, be careful about offering this up if your life isn't an open book.

Other times, they ask the reader a question -- sometimes explaining why they are asking by providing a brief story, and other times simply launching into a question in order to collect a lot of opinions.

Other ideas:

  • Play an enormous game of "Would You Rather" with your readers.
  • Provide readers with four questions. Not only do you get their answer, but it can be revealing to see which question they choose to focus on.
  • Create a poll inside a post, gathering opinions on a single situation.

What was the best question you ever asked on your blog? Which question generated the most discussion?

Thanks for this information!  I've only been blogging for two months and I've learned there's so much more than posting pics and cute stories!  I have yet to ask the reader a question- this is a great suggestion!  ;)

I LOVE to ask questions! Like Melissa said, "When in Doubt, Ask a Question". I am a very observant individual and I get the, "You sure do ask a lot of questions" thing a lot lol! But you make an a** out of yourself if you just ASSume!!!

I like to ask questions for clarification and to engage a conversation. When people ask questions in comments on m blog I try to answer. Yet many comments come through as no reply. And that's really frustrating when a question has been asked.

I ask questions sometimes, mostly because I want to know I'm not writing into a black hole. And I write about things that are important to me, so I want to start a conversation. Sometimes a few people will answer, but the questions don't tend to generate the most comments on my blog. I get the most comments when I bleed onto the screen and smear it around a little. But I do get more comments on Facebook when I post a question on my blog. It's easier for readers to follow up on the conversation on Facebook, so I understand why they do it. But I sure wish they'd cross-post to my blog.

I really want to know what people think who read my blog and I love a good discussion, but I have to admit that I haven't put many questions out there. I've tried a few times and didn't get any response. Heh - that's like a teenager saying they, "TRIIIIIED" and leaving it at that. Okay - I shall try to incorporate more questions and if people respond - great. But if they don't, that will be okay too. I know that sometimes (probably lots of times) I don't respond to other blogger's questions, but I do ponder the questions on my own time.

I love asking questions to find out what other fellow bloggers are thinking! It's a great way to interact and converse on the subject of your blog topic. The most generated discussion was from my question "Are you a Hugger?" I never realized people had so many opinions on the subject.
