While researching my thesis this morning, I came across Scorecard, a website that provides access to pollution information. I typed in my zip code. I found shit-stew.
Salt Lake County is one of the worst counties when it comes to both air pollution and water pollution. Kennecott Copper Mine is the largest contributor, adding almost 140,000,000 pounds of pollutants in my home every year.
I feel so helpless. Kennecott Copper Mine is a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, one of the largest global mining corporations in the world. In the first six months of 2010, Rio Tinto made a profit of $5.8 billion dollars. How in the hell can I go up against a giant like that?
