Where in the world is BlogHer '09?

==UPDATE: OK, the poll has been closed. With thousands of votes between the post-conference survey and this poll, I think we're all set. Thanks you so much everyone, not only for your votes, but also for the awesome civic pride on display in these comments :)

The leading contenders are:
Philadelphia
Portland
St. Louis

This is what happens next: We try to find a venue. Our needs are pretty specific...large enough to hold the conference and the sleeping rooms under one roof (we've heard you that you much prefer that), affordable room rates, calendar availability of course, Wifi capabilities, capacity for exhibitors and sponsors...the basics any conference of our size needs.

Stay tuned...as I said, we hope to announce before the end of the month.

Thanks again!
========================================
I've heard a lot of rumbling out there wondering where BlogHer '09 will be. Well, just like last year, we're going to poll the community. We included the below poll in the post-conference survey for attendees, but we want to make sure those of you who didn't attend can also weigh in.

Please do take the poll and let us know which city is your #1 choice for the BlogHer '09 event in July 2009. And feel free to add it to your site, so your readers can vote too.

Some things we bear in mind that you might want to too:
-Smaller cities and towns are often cheaper to be in, but more expensive to get to
-Same goes for how long it takes to get somewhere...is the city a hub, or will most people have to take multiple flights?
-It's July, so weather is definitely a factor
-We discovered last year that Las Vegas is only cheap during the week. On the weekends it's wildly expensive. So a vote for Vegas is a vote for considering changing the conference to be mid-week!

Finally, after you take this poll the poll will collapse and not let you take it again. Sorry, one vote only, please :)

We hope to make a decision before the month is out, so vote away!!

I live in Portland - if you need any venue visiting help or that kind of thing, I'd be happy to help.  Perfect weather (yeah, no humifiy, and no rain then, either).  Easy to get around w/o a car.  Best rated airport in the country for 2 years running.  And the people are notably nice.  Plus, an hour-ish from the coast for those who want to combine it with a vacation.  Loads of kid-friendly activities.  Ok, I know the voting is over.  Anyway, let me know if help is needed.  Thanks for all you do! Lisa

Well, the Twin Cities weren't on the list (although they should be) but of the three finalists I love St Louis. :)

High humidity, that is.  Can you claim the same thing, St. Louis?  How 'bout you, Philly?  We're talking July here!

Didn't think so.

I hope it's in Philly.  It's a beautiful city, convenient to many BlogHer members who live in the East Coast, and much less expensive than New York or Washington.

rafarris 5 pts

Hey, it's cheaper than most.  Halfway between west coast and east coast, and it has all the amenities of a major metropolitian city.

Oh, I would LOVE for it to be in Portland. But Philly? That would be way cheaper for this Boston girl.

Either way, it'll be a wonderful 30th birthday bash for me :)

We'll of course try to hit a different area from where the annual event is and to hit cities that were popular. That's why Boston, NOLA, ATL are on this year's tour.

I'm excited about BlogHer 09 - and know that any one  of the host cities in the finals will do us proud!

But any possibility about trying to get one of the Outreach conferences to Denver next year? I mean, we made the list of contenders - hopefully that means there's a chance for one of the 2009 outreach conferences to be here!

Meanwhile - see ya in Portland, St. Louis, or Philly! :)

Okay, I can handle Philadelphia - just figured out Sesame Place is only 30 minutes from there so we'll make a family vacation out of it if need be.

Still like St. Louis the best - shorter drive, much more affordable, but way better than Portland - won't make Blogher 09 in Portland.

I don't care where it is, because I'll get a third mortgage if I have to, but please let's have the conference and the beds all in the same building again.  That made such a wonderful difference this year! One all-purpose venue: that's my biggest hope!  The Westin in SF was perfection on a stick.

Elisa,

I used to go to a con every year in St Louis. We had it at the Marriott right next to Busch stadium. There were thousands of attendees, and all of the meetings were held inside the hotel. Looks like it's now a Hilton: hiltonstlouis.com.

I'm sure our St. Louis bloggers could tell you which hotels are worth it. It's been almost 20 years since I was there.

Love ya Philly & St Louis, but it's gotta be Portland. It's a HUGE blogging city: even our dogs blog here! Green, eco-friendly city in every way imaginable, economical (no sales tax!), tons of great places to stay, eat, shop and convene close to one another. Did I mention the great places to eat & shop? Perfect weather during the summer. For those who want to explore, the beach is 1.5 hours away, the mountains less than an hour, & wine country is 30 min away my friends. I'll even host a wine tasting tour (OR Pinot Noir anyone?)

You pick Portland and I will help arrange any details you need. Seriously. It's high time I stop being a BlogHer stalker & actually get my sorry butt to this fab event so if you hold it here in my hometown I promise to help you all rock it, PDX style.

I just have to comment after being in St. Louis this past weekend and being SHOCKED at how affordable it is compared to Chicago (even though I grew up there, I didn't realize how inexpensive it was until I lived elsewhere), I'm hoping it happens there next year. Downtown is fun; the convention center (if that is where it might be held) is very spacious and there are TONS of places to stay in and around there - that are cheap compared to a coast city. Food is also cheap, gas is cheap, the airport is a hub, the people are midwestern-friendly, and the megabus, train, and greyhound bus are viable options for folks to use.

And if it is chosen, wait until you see the list of restaurants that are "musts"...good eatin' there indeed.

Elisa - I used to work for one of the civic organizations there; email me if you want "volunteers" to help get more info.

Late to the party, but big ups to the Lou, for all the aforementioned reasons.  Cheap.  Close.  Plus, a strong, growing blogger community to help.  We could throw a mean convention.

Did I mention Nelly?  Because I didn't mean to.

Another vote for Philly.  It will probably be humid as all heck, but it is an awesome place for a conference.

But don't take my word for it. Have a conference here and see for yourself.

O.K., my original vote was for Omaha (and I stand behind that one still), but if I had to chose an alternate city, Seattle is one I would love to visit.  Especially in July.

Since I live in Houston, I should vote for Austin but the weather in the state of Texas is AWFUL in July. As much as I LOVE Austin, it's a sad fact.

During the survey I voted for several places based on solely on "I want to visit here" but now I vote based on "I want to visit" + "not insanely hot" and that means a lot of places I originally would want to visit are out of the running.

If it was a different time of year, I would go for the east coast or the south but it's SO HOT HERE! I want to get away from from it, not pay money to see some place else that is SO HOT. I would also be down for a Canada excursion.

I agree that having everything under one roof was fabulous, wherever we go next year; I hope it will be that way.

Maria0305 5 pts

I think that made the experience so much more enjoyable for me. Quick change, quick makeup fixes, dropping off swag bags, just taking a break from the bustle; all of it being just an elevator ride away was wonderful for me.

Wherever it is, I will be. :)

We do have a ton of industry here looking to court the female consumer.  The weather is hot, but it's not like there are many "outdoor activities" at Blogher anyways.

Cincinnati was on the original poll - the one given to conference goers - not sure why it didn't make the cut on this one.

It's affordable and central and of course I live there so there is that.

Debra Roby 5 pts

I finally decided to vote for Philly. It's a pretty east coast city that many to get to by car, train or plane. It's probably cheaper than many of the other cities, and it has the Phillies. (I do have my priorities).

I think it's interesting that many of the comments suggest that "more women could attend".. when BlogHer08 was sold out, and there will still be capacity limits no matter where the conference is held. 1000 women really felt too big for the weekend; there were so many people that I simply could not find in the crowd.

Although Denver is a great city, I must admit that I have a problem with the altitude. I'm guessing a number of other people might, too. I could be sick the entire conference, which would make the trip a total waste of time.

Yes, my mom lives there, I grew up there, and it would be killing two birds with one stone for me (business and pleasure trip), but AprilTara has a point,

"I voted for Omaha. Centrally located, major airport, lots of facilities, the Old Market is great and the Midwest is a lot less expensive than the coasts."

All for Omaha???

So yes, I am partial to Philly because I lived there for 5 years and am still a resident of PA. But it's a really cheap city for hotels and eats, its airport is a major hub, and it has so many hidden gems to visit, like the art museum, Fairmount Park, and the Reading Terminal market.  Please, please, please consider coming to the East Coast, as I'd love to attend a conference!

I say St. Louis!

It's right in the middle... (I can drive there) pretty low costs expense wise, I believe...

a metro train takes you right from Lambert airport to downtown and loads of places in between (including the fabulous Forest Park with all of it's FREE attractions like the zoo and museums if you plan on checking out the sites or bringing your family)

I voted St. Louis because it's in the middle of the country, saving everyone the costs of a cross-country flight. Many in the midwest, from all directions, could drive in, and I'm sure St. Louis parking has to be cheaper than the $50/day parking in San Francisco.  I'm guessing that facilities rental has to be cheaper, too, saving BlogHer money. (Maybe it'll be cheap enough that we could have hot buffet meals again?)

That was my first choice, although I'll find a way to get there, no matter where we pick.

Seattle is awesome in July!! It's not too hot and there is tons to do before and after the conference dates. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the Pacific Northwest!!!

I was disappointed to see so many west coast options when it was on the west coast for '08; I think it would be nice to alternate, to give everyone a chance to go at least every other year, if travel expenses are an issue.

I picked Atlanta because I love the South and just really hate New York. Nashville would have been my favourite...Chicago, Baltimore or Boston good picks for easy flights and conference accommodation.

Can we have 2010 in Edinburgh Scotland? I agree with Melawen: 'world' got my hopes up for something closer to home! LOL

It's a fantastic city, and the lower prices there would probably enable many more women to attend.  And it's driving distance for many middle-Americans, who sometimes feel a little overlooked in the whole east coast/west coast bloggy world.

I'm surprised that there aren't more votes for Denver - it's centrally located, easy to get to, great weather, has a total coolness factor and is way more affordable than most of the other options.

I feel for the East Coasters, but going to SF this year cost a small fortune, and going east would be just as expensive (with perhaps the exception of Philly). To make BlogHer accessible to the biggest number of attendees, Denver seems like the top choice. (And St. Louis is closer to me, but is a little ho-hum imho ;) )

Portland is a great place to have the con., Plenty of accomidations, beautiful city, easy to navigate by foot or via light rail / bus. Great weather and places to visit (i.e zoo, breweries, wineries, etc).

This is a really economical place to visit. Hotels are fab and so are people. Something for everyone whether it be cultureal or musical or educational.

If I had to settle for 2nd choice it would be Seattle.
