Where in the world is BlogHer '09?
by Elisa Camahort

==UPDATE: OK, the poll has been closed. With thousands of votes between the post-conference survey and this poll, I think we're all set. Thanks you so much everyone, not only for your votes, but also for the awesome civic pride on display in these comments :)

The leading contenders are:
Philadelphia
Portland
St. Louis

This is what happens next: We try to find a venue. Our needs are pretty specific...large enough to hold the conference and the sleeping rooms under one roof (we've heard you that you much prefer that), affordable room rates, calendar availability of course, Wifi capabilities, capacity for exhibitors and sponsors...the basics any conference of our size needs.

Stay tuned...as I said, we hope to announce before the end of the month.

Thanks again!
========================================
I've heard a lot of rumbling out there wondering where BlogHer '09 will be. Well, just like last year, we're going to poll the community. We included the below poll in the post-conference survey for attendees, but we want to make sure those of you who didn't attend can also weigh in.

Please do take the poll and let us know which city is your #1 choice for the BlogHer '09 event in July 2009. And feel free to add it to your site, so your readers can vote too.

Some things we bear in mind that you might want to too:
-Smaller cities and towns are often cheaper to be in, but more expensive to get to
-Same goes for how long it takes to get somewhere...is the city a hub, or will most people have to take multiple flights?
-It's July, so weather is definitely a factor
-We discovered last year that Las Vegas is only cheap during the week. On the weekends it's wildly expensive. So a vote for Vegas is a vote for considering changing the conference to be mid-week!

Finally, after you take this poll the poll will collapse and not let you take it again. Sorry, one vote only, please :)

We hope to make a decision before the month is out, so vote away!!

Hotlanta

I live in the Nashville area and we have family in the Atlanta area.  How convenient would it be for the conference to be in Atlanta!?  Now...it IS in July and they don't call it Hotlanta for nothing.  But, I think that's why God invented air conditioning! :)

EAST COAST!!

I would have voted for Washington, D.C.  Since that wasn't an option, I chose the next closest -- Philly!!

Boston? Or really, anywhere on the East Coast

Come on. It's been on the West Coast. It's been in the Midwest. If it's not on the East Coast, it will be INFURIATING to the East Coast bloggers, truly. And I don't mean to slight the Atlantans among us, but ... eep, Atlanta in July? GRAH.

I'm mystified that Boston isn't on the list, only because it *is* a techy hip-type hub on the east coast AND it's cheaper than NYC. And it's beautiful! I know I'm biased, as I live in New England, but really, the weather in July is lovely, and it would be a great choice. I ALSO recognize, however, that there aren't a lot of conference-y type hotels in the city proper (ergo the reach-out tour in Burlington, which is not really very close), and I'm guessing that's why it never makes the list.

That being said, Philly is by far my first choice.

Hitting Boston and DC this October...

Atlanta is the only '08 Tour stop that was included on the list only because it's more of a central hub than the East Coast cities

And you're right about Boston and big venues too.

Omaha

I voted for Omaha. Centrally located, major airport, lots of facilities, the Old Market is great and the Midwest is a lot less expensive than the coasts.

ATL, baby!

If the Olympics could make it here in the middle of the summer---so can Blogher! Plus, a little southern hospitality to boot!

I think i'm the only east coaster...

Who voted for the West Coast...Seattle, baby. ;) Never been there. But clearly I'll go wherever...

Loving that we're getting several one-day events on this side of the country, & perhaps wouldn't mind being closer to home in July. So yeah, wherever. ;)

I'm an East Coast girl

And I voted for Southern Cali!! :D

Denver Rules!

No humidity! Techie population. Great hotels and restaurants.  Weekend jaunt to Vail!  Who could ask for more?

PacNW!

I voted for Portland! Powell's Books (68,000 square feet of books!), Voodoo Doughnut (vegan donuts, Elisa!), and no sales tax!

RIGHT ON! I will take

RIGHT ON! I will take Portland or Seattle. It's high 70s-low 80s here then and hardly any humidity! Dreamy.

Seattle!

right in the neighbourhood. I could drive my smart car :-)

Well, why didn't you say so? Vegan donuts
decide it!

Thanks for the tip jeanne :)

I voted my hometown, but

I realize that NYC is kinda pricey, so I won't be offended if it does not work out. But dude, we can do an Off the Beaten (Subway) Track excursion before or after the conference!

If not NYC, Philly seems like an excellent choice. Love that Amish Market! After that, anywhere east seems good to me.

Give us Southwest Chicas a Break! LOL!

Austin please? Ah heck, I could even make it to Denver, but man East coast is just so far to hitch hike . . . . lol

New To Me

I would love to have it some place I haven't been - that lets out Vegas, New York, San Francisco and SoCal from this list. But they are like my favourite places! So I won't be complaining if BlogHer goes there. On the other hand, I will probably visit them anyway after the conference, so actually, yes I'm back to NOT wanting it there.

I don't think the weather is a HUGE deal - I mean, we're inside most of the time during the conference anyway. (Actually, you know what, the weather DOES have to be hotter than SF.)

Definitely would want to have it in a place where the conference and hotel rooms were in the same building.

And, actually, can we have it in Hawaii? That would be wayy cheaper for me to get to ;)

Where in the world?!

I have to point out that I don't think that you actually mean where in the world, but where in the United States!  Would you ever consider some place like London or Paris or even Sydney?

Australia!

Yes, Australia!

East Coast in 2009!

Washington, DC, Boston, Philadelphia, New York City...these are all excellent choices! I couldn't go to the conference this year because of the expense of travel and accomodations so a NE conference would be great (for totally selfish reasons!).

I agree though that you shouldn't consider this a worldwide search of a location. Like the World Series in baseball, this is really a U.S. event/sites, not a global one. If it's expensive for me to go, I can only imagine how prohibitively expensive it would be for the average blogger to come from overseas.

So, until the day comes that you will consider international meeting locations, you should call this a U.S. search for a location.

Portland Portland Portland

good gracious why would anyone want to go to any of the east coast, south or southwestern locations in the summer? portland is the perfect location. great city. fabulous people. wonderful food. wonderful weather and cheap for a city!!!!!

St. Louie Yeah

Yeah I am going for the small town in the big city feel, more affordable and lots to see!  ~Susan

Another vote for PDX

Great public transportation from the airport and around town, bike-friendly, lots of places to walk, great food, awesome music from a variety of genres...just some reasons that I cast my vote for Portland, OR. And yes, I live here, so I admit my bias. It can get hot here in the summer, but the low humidity really does make a difference.

That said, it would be cool to have it in a city either in the midwest or on the East Coast. Honestly, as long as the conference isn't held in Siberia, I'd probably attend wherever it's held!

As for having the conference in another country, as awesome as that would be, I'm guessing as long as the exchange rate against the U.S. dollar stays where it is, that would make it prohibitively expensive for a lot of folks.

Angel, you have spoken a sad truth

The annual event is a huge production...and yes, looking at what we spent in SF can't imagine the costs to go where our poor $$ isn't doing so well (and that would be everywhere right now, right?)

We'll be tackling Reach Out Tour stops a little later...perhaps we'll consider a globe-hopping Tour. I'm hoping for at least Canada :)
