Where's Your Inner Genius?
“Talent does what it can; Genius does what it must.” ~ Edward Bulwer-Lytton
I think of this quote daily as I am in the midst of a huge transition. I spent several years working toward achieving my undergraduate and graduate degrees, all while being a widowed parent and part-time caregiver to my ailing mother. Having recently graduated, I found myself hitting a wall.
What do I do now? School is done, my son is officially a tween, and my mother has fully recovered. I’ve gone through all of this to achieve my goal, and now that I have, now what do I do, especially when the plan does not feel, look, or even taste the same?
The answer is three-fold, yet simple: (1)find something else to achieve, (2) make new plans, and (3) be great while doing so. It is with that answer that I go back to that quote. Talent is one thing, but genius is a whole other dimension within one’s sense of self. A sense that many talented individuals do not tap into. Genius allows people to achieve the otherwise unattainable, do the impossible, and openly discuss and live in the unspeakable. The genius of which I speak, resides in all of us. If one can find that inner genius, they have solved life’s biggest problem, saved themselves, and in turn, are able to save others.
Today’s assignment: tap on the windows of your soul and ask if your inner genius can come out and play. You may be surprised to what can happen when they step into the light.
