TV icon Andy Griffith passed away this week on July 3 at the age of 86. The outpouring of sentiment on blogs and social media was massive and immediate, with many sad baby boomers saying they had lost a small "piece of their childhood." Such is the power of a familiar television sit-com from the classic TV era, when broadcast TV ruled and everyone watched the same shows. As good as today's television comedies are (Louie on fX; Parks and Recreation on NBC), I can't imagine they would generate the gigabytes of Facebook updates expressed by the sad fans of The Andy Griffith Show.
Today classic TV sitcoms are kept alive for new generations by cable TV, DVDs, and Netflix. You don't have to be a boomer to love Lucy, or to think that MASH was a timeless work of art. Which TV comedies still have you laughing and crying, even though you've seen them a million times? Pick from the list below, or tell us what we missed. Mention your favorite characters and episodes in the comments section too.
