Whitney's in our backyard

I recently saw a recap of Whitney Houston's life.  In this clip a younger Whitney shared that her mother, Cissy Houston, didn't want her in show business. Later, in a different interview, a little older Whitney admitted that she understood why her mom was afraid for her.

Before her relationship with Bobby Brown, rumors of drug use and Bobbi Kristina, Whitney sensed something.

As a young woman it's hard enough to maneuver through self-esteem and love issues, I'd imagine trying to chart your way while under the media's microscope adds another level of difficulty.  On a smaller scale, we're accustomed to seeing young mothers in abusive relationships and on drugs. We fault the women for not making better choices but I don't think we see the picture clearly.

If a young woman doesn't believe in herself independent of what the outside world thinks about her, it is very easy to fall in the trap of getting with the wrong crowd. Believing that we need a man, friends or to be liked can lead to our making bad choices. With our scales thrown off, we no longer see love within ourselves so we grasp on to things that appear to be good for us. Things that seem to work for others. Addictions of some sort.

But it's all rooted in self-esteem.

I'm saddened every time I hear a celebrity leaves this earth as a result of an unnatural death.  For some reason, I'd like to believe because of their money they're surrounded by people that love them. When in actuality they are many times surrounded by people that are only there for their money and it seems they will do anything to either keep the cash cow mooing or simply keep the cash cow happy.  By any means necessary.

It looks the same our neighborhoods, where there are no limos or glitzy after parties.  We see  young women looking everywhere but inside for love everyday. They grasp at what our celebrities say they must have to reach happiness and then...yet another celebrity is in an abusive relationship, drug rehab or dead as a result of some self-inflicted method. Once again proving that all the money in the world can buy what's already inside you, love.

We can only hope to find someone to compliment us but the loving us part, well, that responsibility is ours alone.

Obviously, Whitney's mom knew something about her daughter and show business that didn't set quite right with her.  It's sad, in the end, her worse fears came true.

Praying for peace for the Houston family and the realization of self-love for every women seeking it externally.

R.I.P Whitney.

I loved Whitney Houston, and it broke my heart to hear such a beautiful and talented individual fell and couldn't get herself back up. What a loss of life. What a tragedy. I, too, pray for peace for her family, and her daughter.

Thank you for a wonderfully and heartfelt piece you've written, Sabrina.
