Note from Cece: A few weeks ago Stephanie and Cece were making chicken soup and they thought about how much fun they had during the year of the Tiger surprising Yun with a Chinese New Year’s celebration! So , in that moment, they decided to host a Chinese New Year party for this, the year of the dragon. Cece texted Yun about the chosen date…which was a bit past Chinese New Year since Stephanie would be away. No response from Yun. Cece finally tracked Yun down a week later and yes, she could make it. Party On! Cece then began to invite others to the party.
From Yun: ” Sometimes, Yun doubts that she is truly a Chinese. The doubts do not come often, they only visit when the Two Whos meet, and when one Who asks Yun, “what’s the name of the cake that represents lucky for Chinese New Year?” or “what are the lucky food for Chinese New Year?”
Then the Who, Cece, would go on and on about Chinese New Years. Yun looks at Cece like a cow playing the guitar. wondering who is the ‘real’ Chinese here. If there is a bystander listening in, he/she would guess that the Chinese would be Cece, and that Yun is receiving a Chinese culture education from her!
A few years back, the year of the tiger, Cece hosted a Chinese New Year party for a couple of friends. Yun showed up having done a personal retreat from the Zen center, having no idea she was being surprised with a Chinese New Years party! Yun marveled that Cece had it all together: authentic decorations and lucky foods! Yun wonders now what Cece is “cooking up” for the year of Dragon?
Today, the Two Whos plan to meet for lunch, and Cece informs Yun that there will a party for the New Year. Yun gets out her iPhone and asks, “What is the date of Chinese New Year?” Cece says, “You do not have to look it up, it is January 23rd…a Monday.” Yun says, “Are you sure?” Cece says “Yes!” Yun puts her phone away! Yun is pleased, except, Cece starts to ask questions again: “Do you know how to make long noodles, they represent longevity.” Cece gestures the long noodles by stretching her arms then making a jumping rope with her arms…no not that long… Yun’s jaw drops because she is imagining the chef making and stretching the noodles in the restaurants, and she is thinking about the jump rope. But, Cece is kidding with her ! Those are skills Yun does not have!
Sensing Yun’s confusion, Cece adds, “You know the kind you normally make?” Yun is relieved, she says sheepishly yet proudly; “They are Spaghetti noodles!” The Two Whos throw back their heads and laugh their heads off! People in the Whole Foods are looking at them…hysterically laughing and smiling!
“For us? Spaghetti will do just fine.” Cece giggles, and Yun senses that Cece can bend a bit from being a ‘real’ Chinese.
Yun suggests that they have Chinese for lunch, Cece hesitates: “I prefer some salad because the soy sauce has too much sodium for me.” Now is Yun’s turn to giggle: “What kind of Chinese are you not loving soy sauce?” Yun thinks she is more Chinese than Cece. But this might not last long, Yun is waiting for Cece’s next question:, “What’s the lucky desert made from rice people eat for New Year?” Yun decides to do a bit Googling to be prepared. Before she gets a chance, there comes several emails from Cece with links to Chinese New Year traditions and the rice cake recipe! Yun shakes her head with great joy, who says Cece can not be more Chinese than Yun? This must be how society or human existence advances, we mix and mingle, and we become one!
Happy Chinese New Year from the Two Chinese Sisters!
