[Editor's Note: Have you heard about Whole Food's promotion of halal products for Ramadan? Well, a right-wing blogger accused the crunchy supermarket of supporting Jihadists. A Twitterstorm ensued over whether or not the chain had pulled its holiday promotion. --Grace]

Whole Foods had a hot mess on its hands today after an anti-Islam blogger took to the web-waves to slam the national grocer for incorporating halal food offerings in its stores around the nation. The organic, health-conscious store has been promoting its month-long offerings for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan...

Agreed! It infuriates me that people try to make those connections.

I do not see any difference between offering Halal foods for Ramadan and offering Kosher foods during Jewish high holidays (yes, I realize Kosher foods are generally available all year). I think Whole Foods most definitely got unfairly pinned here. That's one of the great things about this country, is that we are a VAST AND DIVERSE people. We celebrate vast and diverse things. Offering Halal foods during Ramadan does not, in any way, mean Whole Foods supports Jihadists.

Its unfortunate that WF has come under scrutiny for supporting a blessed holiday and supporting products deemed Halal. It is this over the top rhetoric that is divisive and destructive to all communities, regardless of your faith. Because at the end of the day, we are supposed to be human beings standing for what is right. Many feel that, well it has nothing to do with me so I will stay silent. This is what many Muslims witness when they are being blasted on, complete silence. And it sometimes confirms for them (some) why they sometimes consider themselves separate from this world. Muslims do deal with 'jihad', its an internal struggle of the soul whose meaning has been hijacked to mean something other than, but is is this internal struggle that causes peace loving, moderate Muslims to stay strong and compassionate even in the face of racist agendas, and blatent bigotry. When you unwrap the package, we are all the same, and bleed the same. We live in ONE world. And if we are not in this TOGETHER, dont believe that you will be protected from the ugliness that ensues. ONE WORLD.

Political correctness gone awry. Substitute "Christmas" for "Ramadan" and you'd probably end up with the same "controversy"... why is it so horrible to mention a religious time your customers celebrate? I don't tihnk marketing during Ramadan supports jihad any more than I think marketing during Christmas supports extremists who commit murder in the name of Christianity.

I do think whole foods got unfairly pinned. while I myself and learning more about the culture and ramadon I think the idea of NOT having halal becase it may offend a certain religious group or imply support of a political thought is absolutely crazy. If that was true than all PETA supporters would be boycotting every store out there that sold anything that contained animal prodcts.... we don't see any major chain reacting to that now do we????
