Whole30 diet enhances Paleo weight loss plan: How to try it

When a weight loss plan is featured in Elle magazine, you know it's become a trend. And that's what's happened to the Whole30 diet. "The diet du jour of the social media set is Whole30, an extremely strict, high protein, no grain regimen that spans 30 days with no slip-ups, or else," proclaimed Elle. What is this mystical magical plan? We've got the skinny here.

The book's title is deceptively simple: "It Starts with Food: Discover the Whole30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways." But the diet? Not so easy. 

You must avoid all forms of sugar, alcohol, all grains, dairy, legumes, white potatoes and processed products.  And that includes those Paleo products labeled gluten-free.

And about those 30 days: Don't even dream about cheating: "You need such a small amount of any of these inflammatory foods to break the healing cycle — one bite of pizza, one splash of milk in your coffee, one lick of the spoon mixing the batter within the 30-day period and you’ve broken the 'reset' button, requiring you to start over again on Day 1." OMG.

Elle magazine asked one of our favorite nutritionists, Keri Glassman, to comment. "I like people to be strict for four to seven days to give them a jump-start and reset the behaviors," she says. “But 30 days is a long time and can be very restrictive, especially if you have to start over." 

If you like the idea of a plan that forces you to be clean for 30 days, however, we have good news: You can do a lot of cupboard cleaning. The shopping list includes lots of vegetables, meat, seafood, fruit, coconut milk and healthy fats such as extra-virgin olive oil.
