Why (and How) Our Family is Taking a Year Off

When you tell people that you are voluntarily moving into a 24 foot travel trailer with your husband and two kids, you get to enjoy a variety of reactions. Confusion, excitement, doubt. Envy and encouragement. I've seen a broad spectrum of responses play across different faces over the last 8 months since I began telling people that I was planning to sell the bulk of my stuff and move my family into an RV so that we could travel around America for a year.

Reitts family

It's been interesting -- and often surprising -- to see which emotions come from which faces; we've found support in the most unlikely places and "concern" where we least expected it. But mostly what we've run into are questions.

The who, what, where, and when have been the easiest to answer.

Who? We're a family of four: a 31-year old freelance writer (me!), a 30-year old cable installer (the husband), an 11-year old boy (Devin), and a 6-year old girl (Emma). No one gets left behind on this trip.

What? We've committed to at least a year of traveling the United States. We'll be living in a 24 by 8 foot travel trailer that we pull behind our old SUV. We plan to stay in each location for a couple of weeks at a time, parking in campgrounds, driveways of friends, and the occasional Wal-Mart parking lot.

Where? We know we can't see all of America in one year, but we're sure going to do our best to cover many of the parts we haven't seen yet. For us (a family originally from the Midwest and currently living in Florida), that means traveling up and down the East Coast, wintering in the South, and exploring the West next spring and summer. We've put together a map of our route with the specific goal of avoiding cold weather as much as possible, but we're also being purposefully flexible with our planning. In fact, we haven't even left yet and we've already changed the location of our first stop because of a blogging event we're attending in Georgia at the beginning of June!

When? We pull out of our driveway on June 1, five days after the last day of school.

Then the questions start to get a little harder to answer. The questions themselves start to get more complicated. It's not just how. It's how will you pay for it and how will you handle school and how will you and your husband have *ahem* alone time?

We're paying for it with the millions of dollars we won from our state lottery.

Not really.

Actually, we've been paying for it, in part, for almost a year. We've been scrimping and saving and living without new shoes or cable TV. All of that saving (and three massive garage sales) helped us save up about half of what we think we'll need for a year on the road.

The other half will be paid for by blogging.

Yes, really.

I'm a professional blogger and freelance writer, and I'll be able to keep doing that work as we travel. Does that mean I make tens of thousands of dollars every month blogging?

Um, no. That means that we figured out that living in an RV and traveling full-time is actually cheaper than maintaining our current lifestyle in an Orlando suburb. A lower monthly cost of living makes it easier for me to support us with my blogging, and made it possible for my husband to take the entire year off from working - turns out cable installation isn't conducive to the nomadic lifestyle.

Fortunately, that frees him up to take charge of the kids' schooling for the year.

Neither one of us has ever considered homeschooling before. In fact, we've both been pretty adamant that homeschooling was not a viable option for our family. And yet, here we are, investigating virtual schools and reading up on homeschooling curriculum.

And by we I mean him, because he is Officially In Charge of that aspect. (Yay for partnerships!)

Speaking of partnerships, ours plans to maintain itself with a little creativity, a lot of open communication, and a couple of tents we're bringing along for occasional outdoor sleeping nights for the kids.

Which brings us to the most difficult question of all... why?

Why in the world did we decide to do this?

I've been asked this question so many times, and I still don't have a good answer. The truth is, there are multiple reasons.

  • I hate that my kids don't have recess at school.
  • Travel is a personal passion

First of all let me commend you on such a courageous decision. I applaud your family for taking the adventure of your life. My wife and 3 kids traveled around for several years off and on. It was because of home schooling that we were able to do so together. I worked as an insurance adjuster in the Southeast. We still enjoy traveling in our travel trailer since our kids are now grown. Our one and only grandson of 5 has taken the kid's seat and loves to travel with us. Let's go camping poppa.
Enjoy your travels. I know you are documenting your travels and it will make a great book to encourage others to take the same step as you did.

I hope that when we reach the point of such freelance success that we'll remember to actually step out and take the action we're living towards. have a fantastic year!

I started wondering what you were up to when I saw you selling your shoe collection.

I think it's awesome. Since you're already a freelancer, you know that the things that seem so scary are really just things. You can always start over.

Of course, I think that you are crazy nuts to do this, but at the same time, I think it is a truly inspired idea. I'm sure there will be trials and tribulations, and all that other unfun stuff, but gosh, there will be so much laughter, and discovery. I do hope you have a blog set up - I feel a book coming. Travel safe and please send out the link to your blog for the trip once you have it..

Britt - what a great way to educate yourselves and your children about geography, traveling and living independently, off the grid, so to speak.

I commend you and your husband for coming up with a way to do what so many others would love to do but can't right now. This is something my husband and I would love to do, but aren't right now because we don't have the finances. So, in short, we are both going to college online, he started a year ago and I will be starting next week. As you well know, summer vacation is just around the corner and our 8 year old will be out of school for a couple of months. My husband and I will be able to spend quality time with her and I will start my life as a college student and a stay-at-home mother. Something I have wanted to do for quite some time. I have a medical condition that has developed into something more serious and not working will be less stressful and good for me. I will also write part time for a company my husband has been writing for the last few months, so money will be tight, but we'll manage.

Sorry, I have gone on way too long and I look forward to hearing and seeing your adventure throughout the United States. Have a blast!

No joke, Britt. You. Are. My. Hero. We are also RVers and when I drift off in the middle of the day, battling writer's blog, I'm dreaming about a year, traveling the country with trailer in tow. There's no shortage of virtual schools that can help us with homeschooling. I work remotely now and could continue. Hubby's job is problematic and I don't wish that away, but wow...if we did win millions in the state lottery, we'd be in your shoes. Enjoy your trip! And I can't wait to read how it goes! Are you doing any campground hosting? I swear after a year following a race circuit, my retirment will be spent state park hopping as a host. :-)

I just love this. What a way to enjoy life, each other and the country. I'm sure you will inspire others to do the same.

All the best to you and your family.

Or really...in about 15 years. When I get down, I imagine this life, but I do fear that we would kill each other.. or the kids would. And I can't imagine dealing with the 90 pound dog in an RV.
But it'
s 100% my retirement goal..and I am completely jealous!

Maybe I didn't read it correctly, but are you selling or renting out your home while you area away?

My husband and I talked about doing something like this recently, just about the logistics if we wanted to pull up and move somewhere different. So many things to consider!

sold everything including our house, and bought a travel trailer 11 years ago. We have lived and worked in some of the most beautiful places along the way. Georgia, Florida, Texas, Virgina, Pennsylvania, Kansas and now at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

I love my life, I have so much less stress, and we have more money than we ever had in our adult lives. If I had a choice of whether to do it again or not, I definitely would.

And yes, we got the full spectrum of reactions when we told friends and family what we were planning to do, from "are you out of your minds?" to "I wish we could do that too."

The truth is, anyone can do this, you just have to decide what your priorities are. Do you want to be owned by your house and job, or do you want a stress free, happy live? Good for you that you are doing it now, I wish we had done it 10 years before earlier.

My husband and I got married a week after we graduated from college and since he went to West Point he had 2 months off before he had to report for duty.

We bought a van and traveled from Chicago, to see friends in Detroit, then Holland Mich. Then took a ferry to Milwaukee for summerfest, Wis.Dells, Minneapolis, South and North Dakota, then across Canada (we camped some here and also had our bikes with us.)

Then Vancouver, Portland, Seattle, SFO, LAX, Las Vegas, relatives in Omaha and back to Chicago.

It was fabulous! We did stay in a hotel about 3 different nights for a break! Have fun!

You are now the 2nd family that I know that is doing this. Another friend of mine in MD just sold her house and bought one of those fantastic silver trailers and she and her toddler son are traveling the states. She posts on facebook often and I love seeing friends write on her wall inviting them to their state.

Safe travels!

I absolutely love that you and your husband are being intentional with your lives, breaking out of the standard living ruts, and making things HAPPEN. Your kids will remember this for the rest of their lives, and will likely be inspired to dream and do what matters to them most throughout life. I am totally happy for you, and thankful that blogging allows people income as they live unconventionally. Enjoy!!
