Why High Fructose Corn Syrup is on my Hit List!
By NatFitandFrugal on October 11, 2012
Have you seen those wonderful adds toting High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) as a Natural Sweetener, one that is equal too sugar! You know the ones that say it is a natural product that in moderation can be a healthy part of our diet.
Do you know who makes these adds my wanting to be healthy friends " The Corn Refiners Association". Yep that is right , they are made by the people that supply corn to make the product so ofcourse they want you to believe its good for you. Did you know they even sent out several hundreds of thousands of pamphlets to Dr's offices and asked them to distribute them to their patients. And that one Dr got blacklisted and harassed by them for going against there "health" advice on HFCS. Hmmm I smell something fishy. Add the fact that the corn could have been Genetically Modified and yeah do I need to say more.
High Fructose Corn Syrup is a NO NO in our house. I am a label reader and it is this exact ingredient that got me started on reading labels.
So what does it do exactly?
A princeton University study showed that participants that consumed HFCS gained significantly more weight than those with access to regular old sugar.
In addition long term consumption of HFCS also led to abnormal increases in body fat , especially in the abdomen and a rise in triglycerides. It is also connected to diabetes, since HFCS was introduced into our diets the chance of developing diabetes has risen more than 7 times.
That is not all, it has also been linked to heart disease, cancer, dementia, liver failure, tooth decay and more.
It is things like High Fructose Corn Syrup and proven studies that make me wonder why we still question why there is a rise in diseases and obesity trends.
I have a personal story about the effects of High Fructose Corn Syrup on my own body.
I moved to the USA in 2004, I was a relatively small thing and always had been, I never had to battle my weight. HFCS was not a part of the Australian diet at that time , it has since found its way into products over there unfortunately.
So I moved here as a svelte new bride. I started eating things I had usually eaten and introducing new foods to my diet , this happens when you move to another country. I had no idea about High Fructose Corn Syrup or how many products it was in.
After a year I had put on at least 10 pounds. I couldn't understand why and anything I tried to do to take it off was futile. Nothing helped.
Early 2005 about a month after I moved to USA Size 6
2006 1.5 years Verging on a size 10 (notice the baggier shirts)
I then started hearing and reading things about early studies on High Fructose Corn Syrup. So that go me looking at labels, nearly everything processed in my cupboard had this nasty little thing in it.
During this time I went to the Dr's to have my yearly checkup and surprise surprise my cholesterol levels were quite high. What?? I exercise and eat ok, I am young!
I started cutting HFCS slowly because it was in soooo much stuff. Sauce, Bread, Cereal, Jelly, Peanut Butter. Everything.
Finally my weight started budging, finally I saw a change. My cholesterol levels came back down. I have no doubt in my mind that this was part of my weight issue and my high cholesterol.
Thankfully now there are many companies that realize people stopped buying their products because of this gross stuff. Also cutting down on processed foods in your diet means you don't even have to give it a second thought.
The Corn Industry would like us to believe that all Sugar is the Same but Dr Mark Hyman, MD has this to say.
"True, pharmacologic doses of any kind of sugar are harmful, but the biochemistry of different kinds of sugar and their respective effects on absorption, appetite and metabolism are different."
Next time you reach for that drink or grab that loaf of bread, read your labels. Cut this out of your diet and see what it can do for you!
