Why I Don't Think Facebook's "Rape Fan" Page Is Funny

I don’t know about you, but I kind of find jokes about rape spectacularly unfunny. And not one of my friends would ever accuse me of being a humorless drag.

So why does Facebook think rape jokes are a laugh riot? So much so that they’re even insisting on their right to continue publishing a Rape Fan page on their UK site. Is it a woman-man thing? What?

To wit:

It is very important to point out that what one person finds offensive another can find entertaining--just as telling a rude joke won’t get you thrown out of your local pub, it won’t get you thrown off Facebook.

(Facebook statement 17.8.11)

On second thought, I did spit out my beer after reading this hilarious quote from the fan page:

You know she’s playing hard to get when your (sic) chasing her down an alleyway.

And, well, this partial post made me laugh so hard I almost had to be sedated!

I have raped many women….no lie and I rape a pregnant bitch and tell my friends I had a threesome.

No wonder I’m speechless! But thankfully, Orlagh Ni Leid has not been so silent.

I stumbled across this page and was shocked to see not only rape 'jokes,' but outright advocacy and even apparent confessions.

Which, oddly enough, Orlagh didn’t find funny. So the young British student launched a petition asking Facebook to delete the page. Which they haven't. The petition has since attracted worldwide attention in a way the company probably didn’t intend. And now, according to Orlagh, there’s a Facebook petition gathering steam in the U.S.

What’s really funny, if we’re going to talk about comedy and social media here, is that Facebook actually already knew about its problematic rape page. Because thousands of people had complained about it. Which then led Facebook (I’m getting awfully tried of typing that word) to issue its hilarious response about what’s funny to someone else is not necessarily funny to you. Yadda yadda yadda. Come to think of it, sort of like the way blokes joke in a pub!

Get it?

It’s hardly the first time Facebook has been slammed for denigrating women. In 2010, BlogHer’s Julie Ross Godar took the company to task for a fan page called Hitting Women, after noting its policies strangely ask users to refrain from content that is “hateful, threatening, pornographic, or that contain nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.'' Did Facebook not get the message then?

All of which leads me to ask: Isn’t it amazing how quickly jokes can travel via the power of Facebook?

I don't think it's funny at all. I don't believe I should have a reason to NOT think it's funny, either. Anyone who has a mother, sister, wife or daughter - or anyone female in their lives, really should not think it's funny.

Rape is not about sex, it's not about lust nor love. It's about men telling YOU WOMEN that you are worthless. That your vagina is the only thing that matters to them. That it's the only thing they obsess about. They don't care about you as a human being. They don't believe you have soul, intelligence, dignity. You're NOTHING to a person with intent of rape. You're LESS than nothing but a hole.

If anyone think the above paragraph is funny, try being on the receiving end of the verb. Then come back to me and tell me how 'funny' it is.

If only this were the sort of thing that would make people stop using facebook! That would really be a stand to take, wouldn't it? II just dislike Facebook for so very many reasons and this is just another to add to the list.

Wait a second. Hold up.

Breastfeeding photos are considered Porno and are banned from Facebook including Fan Pages that talk about it and show it but a RAPE page and ABUSE page are OK????? I'd like to know how much crack these people are smoking. Seriously.

Anne's comment is right on the money (pun not intended)--Zuckerberg et al would never allow a page called "Serial killing is great!" or even "Strangling puppies!" Yet rape is a JOKE, which makes this particular page okay? Really??

This absurdity reminds me of something I faced when I was still in the classroom. As a teacher in an 8th grade gifted class, I once confiscated a list that was circulating the room: "If you could rape anyone in history, who would it be?" Below names and signatures. I took a hard line on punishing the instigator and the participants - as many girls as boys, wouldn't you know.

I will never forget two phone calls I got that night - both from mothers of girls who were in the class. The first mother was equally appalled and appreciative.

The second was irate that I had punished the kids. "Couldn't I appreciate childish humor?" I replied by saying that I hoped for her daughter the subject of rape could remain a joke and was never a reality. She hung up on me.

Disgusting that anyone would think rape should be a fan page on Facebook. Come on Mark Z. removing that junk cannot be a violation of anyone's rights!

Why don't we go whole hog and support a "Murder" fan page? Or "I Heart Hate Crimes?" Seriously, people, there aren't enough jokes that debase safety, security and decency out there on the internet.

Everyone who confessed on there should get a wake up call from their local police department.

Funny as a heart attack. Funny as a double root canal. Funny as stomach cancer. Actually scratch the last one since there actually is a cancer comedy releasing this weekend. This site is despicable. If Facebook had a soul (NOT!) they should be ashamed.
