Why You Need A Statement Necklace (with suggestions)
By Adriele on November 04, 2013
I'll be the first to admit that years ago when the statement necklace came out, I was skeptical. It looked huge and ridiculous and almost gaudy. But as the trend has evolved, so have my thoughts on the matter. I'm 100% on board now. The best part about a great statement necklace is that it can be as basic or crazy as you want it to be. They have gorgeous gemstone necklaces, punk rock spikes, tribal inspired, all metal, the list goes on and on. And, as always, since this trend has been around for a while- they come in ALL price points! Hooray!
Everyone knows about the J. Crew "bubble" necklace. This is sort of the gateway statement necklace. I love how accessible they have become and how it sort of shook up how ladies accessorized. I don't have any concrete evidence to back this up, but I am willing to bet that this is the most copied/knocked off necklace online.
Here's the good news: they are a GREAT source of added color in an outfit. Bad news: that specific necklace is no longer "in style" like it was. It's not terrible, but they're kinda overplayed. Ergo, if you're going for trendy, skip over the bubble necklace. Allow me to introduce you to some alternatives!
The Standard: J. Crew
Double-Row Crystal Necklace
Gem Stack Necklace $98
J. Crew has some AMAZING and gorgeous options here. 25% off when you spend $150 with the code SHOPNOW. If you're not in the market to spend that much on a necklace, here are some other options.
The Frugal Champion: JewelIQ
Electronic Blue Gems Collar $25
Here's why I love this site- all jewelry is $25 or under. That's right. I didn't stutter. They are by far the best bang for your buck out there. They also change selection frequently, so if there isn't something that you like immediately, keep them in mind and check back often. For those of you that want to update your wardrobe, but are on a budget, I would recommend checking them out. (Side note, I own quite a few pieces from there, and they have held up great.)
The Blogger Staple: Ily Couture
Basilissa Necklace $69
This necklace is quite popular among fashion bloggers. It starts out at a steep $170 but is usually on sale for less. It's basic and cute and looks quite elegant. Plus the basic coloring lends well to pairing with all colors in your wardrobe.
The Mega Mart Brand: Target
Target Glass Necklace $30
This necklace was an impulse buy when I was out just because I walked past it, saw it, and loved it! There is something to be said about being able to look at something tangible in front of you before you purchase it. There are fewer options than JewelIQ, and they are less expensive than J. Crew or Ily Couture, so if you want something to look at before you purchase I'd go with Target.
Local boutiques are also a fantastic place to find statement necklaces. If you want something unique that you can't find everywhere, I would definitely recommend going that route. I know that this may seem a bit much if you're not accustomed to having that much "bling" on, but trust me, it's a great way to up the style of any button up shirt, sweater or dress. Rejuvenate an old LBD with a new statement necklace, or add some color to a basic white button up.
I encourage you to find something that you love, but also comfortable with. If you get something TOO crazy, you'll be prone to let it sit there in your drawer and that doesn't do you any good. Don't let someone talk you into something that's way beyond your comfort zone. Good luck with finding a great statement necklace!
