Why You Should RUN to See Bridesmaids

I went to see Bridesmaids this past weekend with my husband and if you haven't seen it, run to see it... don't walk.

It's one of those rare studio films with mostly female leads that is both hilariously entertaining and moving and it will entertain guys as much as girls. I say run to see it, as these films aren't greenlit that often and if we want to see more female stories on the big screen and female writers succeed in Hollywood, we have to support them early on in their theatrical distribution.

The film has already made over $100 million at the box office, making it one of the most successful comedies of the year and proving that there is actually a huge audience for women-led films. Kristen Wiig (of Saturday Night Live fame) is not only the star of this hysterical take on life as a single woman whose best childhood friend is getting married, but she co-wrote the script alongside Annie Mumolo. I can't tell you how happy I was to see a movie where women actually dominated the cast and where the female characters were actual characters as opposed to objects for the male gaze. Go female writing team! And Judd Apatow, aside from being married to a kick ass woman, you got something right- you mentored and encouraged a female writer who should continue to write and hopefully will be directing soon as well. We need to encourage more women like Kristen in Tinseltown if we want to see a landscape that is more reflective of reality -- where women are characters and complex human beings as compared to just eye candy.

[Editor's Note: Have you seen Bridesmaids yet? What do you think? Beginning of a new era in female cinema? I hope so! --Morgan]

Glad to see so many women engaged in dialogue in BlogHer. Fyi: Bridesmaids recently became the most successful Judd Apatow movie to date, great news for the future of women in comedy (I hope).

...Seriously! and I loved Hangover! I laughed so hard I was concerned that I might snort. My friend (awaiting a lung transplant) was glad she brought her oxygen! The trailors don't do this movie justice.
Melissa McCarthy (Megan)steals the show and there are some poignant moments tossed in with the nonstop hilarity. and as for the gross out scene...SNORT!!!

I have not seen it yet but it is definitely on my list to see it. I love Melissa McCarthy and I hear she was awesome. Rebel Wilson is also a new comedian (for me) that I want to get to know too. I hear hers is a small part but she makes a big impression.

I am not a movie goer myself, however, now that I have read this review and then the comments I think I might find myself in the theater watching this. I love what Lovebabz has to say about the movie and watching the growth of the characters. (I am a bit scared of the gross out scene..but I will manage)

I will be back to discuss as soon as I see the film..

I laughed a lot, but a few scenes were over-the-top and unbelievable. The part in which Annie pulls out of her "poor me" wallowing was great.

I saw this with my mom and sis and we are still talking about it and cracking up! Finally a crass, no apologies movie for us gals! Yes, I was almost offended at times, but I kinda liked it. I can't wait to see it again!

I appreciate the review! I hope to see it soon, though I rarely make it to the theater.

Saw it. Loved it. Wanted to stay in my seat and watch it all over again immediately. What's not to love about a movie that has immensely funny women, cupcakes, golden retriever puppies and a cute Irish boyfriend. It wins on every level, and though I am haunted by the infamous "gross out scene", it didn't take away from my overall rating one tiny bit. An A++

I've been hearing it's been getting good reviews. The trailers look like the female version of "The Bachelor Party". Thanks for the critique. I'm going with my husband. Or maybe I'll use it as an excuse to go out with my daughters.

I think the real gems of this movie is the fact that you see the growth. From lack of self worth, to standing in your own grace and coming to grips with your reality. I didn't like the gross out scene, that could have played differently it was way too long and I am not sure women would roll like that. But I get it.

I enjoyed it. I think women ought to go see it and discuss where they see themselves in the film...past and or present.

Not a fan of gross-out stuff. Sigh. I hope there's ample warning to turn away.

Loved it, but must admit that I could have done without the gross out scene.

I was pretty grossed out.

But the rest of it - primo!

I rarely go to the movies anymore, but this one is on my list for sure.
