Why You Should Switch To Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

Did you know chemicals in your cleaning products can be making you and your family sick? But what can you do?

One thing you can do, is make sure all of your cleaning products; like laundry detergents, dishwasher detergents, surface cleaners, and bathroom cleaners are nontoxic and made with plant-based ingredients.

Here are a few you can probably pick up in your local market...

Simple Green - Naturals

ARM & HAMMER - ESSENTIALS

Clorox - Green Works

Or, if you're willing to go the extra mile, make your own. Did you ever consider making your own cleaning products? Not only is this a more eco-friendly cleaning option, but in these hard economic times, you'll save a bunch of money, too.

Products needed:

  • Oranges, Lemons, or Limes (scent of your choice)
  • White-distilled Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Dishwashing soap
  • Water *Note some recipes will call for ammonia, you may substitute three tablespoons vinegar or lemon juice in it's place.

The citric acid found in these fruits can make for a different kind of "punch", one that packs a lot of cleaning power! By mixing any of these juices with water in a spray bottle, you can clean a multitude of messes, including grease. By adding vinegar, you are doubling up on the acidity. This household concoction, that rivals the harshest of chemicals, can effectively kill most mold, bacteria, and germs. From Vinegartips.com , I will list just a few of the (many) household cleaner "recipes" they provide...

[*A quick note: If you or someone in your family has asthma or any other respiratory condition, avoid using ammonia.]

Do you use eco-friendly cleaning products? Do you make your own? Tell me about it in comments.

I use bio vert laundry detergent ( http://greenhome.huddler.com/products/bio-vert-lau... ). And still some left over Shaklee BasicH ( http://www.shaklee.com/00015.html ) (I've had it over a year, it lasts forever) that I uses as a all purpose cleaner. I have been using Shaklee's dish soap as well.

I do prefer Bio Life laundry soap, it's a Shopper's Drug Mart brand. Very light and fresh smelling. But the Bio Vert is ok too, Wal-Mart handy.

I'm still looking for hair products that are eco friendly AND work. I love, love, love Live Clean ( http://www.live-clean.com/ ) shampoo and conditioner (Canadian Product). But wish I could find some curl enhancer and straightening product that was earth friendly. Some days I wanna be curly, and some days I feel like straight hair.

When I was a kid I spent a lot of time with my grandmother. She bleached everything. I got into the habit myself due to her influence. I have since swithed to primarily cleaning with homemade products. Vinegar is what I use most of the time now and it works great without making me sick.  I love that what I use now has less negative impact on the environment and my kids can help out with the cleaning- bonus!

I've tried the Green Works and really like it - nice scent, and works great.  I just hope it really is environmentally good.  Seeing that Clorox brand on there made me wonder.

Just have to point out something about the Dr. Bonner - they're soap, and what a pain to scrub the shower or tub when you use it regularly!

I've been using Dr. Bronner's soaps very successfully. Still, it's odd how often I grab for the Clorox spray just out of habit. I also recently unclogged a drain with white vinegar and baking soda. Score for the health of our bodies, the planet, AND my pipes!
