My daughter came home from a friend's house the other day and proceeded to tell me the Wii Fit told her she is overweight.
After I pulled my heart out of my throat and put it back in my chest, I asked for all of the details.
She said she put in her height (54 in.) and weight (81 lbs), and a chart came up that put her in the "overweight" category.
Her "friend" looked at her with an "ewww" expression, and then just had to say, "I am always NORMAL."
Ok.
First of all, my child has NEVER been told by her DOCTOR that she is overweight. She will be 10 years old in August, and she wears a 10/12.
Next, do we or do we not have enough young girls with eating disorders in this country? I understand the whole "Amercia is obese" dilemma going on, but this is too much.
Luckily my child brushed this off. She does have good self-esteem and isn't taking this seriously. But there will be girls out there who will be crushed if they go through this.
Nintendo needs to consider putting age-appropriate comments in the Wii Fit game. Maybe children under 18 do not get called "overweight".
Especially if they are not.

I agree with you
I have a wii fit and I love it BUT I have issues with the BMI/weight functionality for kids (and also for adults, but that's slightly different.)
I've been working on a wii fit post and will be including yours as part of mine. Hopefully I'll find the time to get it finished by mid-week next week.
Thanks for bringing this post to BlogHer.

Thanks Denise.
I emailed our local (Philadelphia) NBC network to see if that situation would be something they would like to look into and report on. They just called me this morning, and to my dismay wanted to do a whole story on it and interview me and my daughter. That was NOT what I had intended! I told the woman I didn't want my daughter to be put out there...she had already suffered the humiliation with just ONE friend seeing her labeled as "overweight". I thought if NBC new what was going on, they could do a story "in general", but she said no, they would need a family to interview.
I need to put my daughter's feelings before anything like that, so if they can't do the story without me like I thought they could, I guess it's not happening!
I appreciate you including me in your post! I'll be watching for it!

I understand
That's part of the reason I haven't been able to finish my post. I'd like to blog at length about my children and tell their "stories" but I also need to consider one child's privacy. So - how to tell it without making her uncomfortable... I'm still working on that part.
She's 12, it's a tough age and this is a tough topic. I've blogged it a little bit but not with the depth I'd like.

Yikes
The Wii probably also doesn't take into account the amount of muscle a person has. Muscle weighs more than fat, as we all know....
