Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez has been selected as one of four International BlogHer Activist Scholarship Recipients. Sanchez is known for her bold criticism of the Castro regime -- which is phones or texts overseas to people who upload the information on her blog. She has been criticized, and even beaten, because of her work. Now she faces another obstacle: the Cuban governement may not let her travel to San Diego to receive her award at BlogHer '11 this August.

AnaRC at Latism writes about calling Yoani with the good news, then finding out the bad news:

I’ve had several conversations with Yoani. I’ve also inquired about the process and how a “permission” can be granted. ”Yoani has criminal records!”, was the first answer I received. However, her criminal record consists in her courageous blog, her daring tweets and her public meetings where she records the Razones Ciudadanas videos.
