Voice of the Week

I've been thinking a lot about how BlogHer can work harder every day to build a global stage for people to listen to women at a virtual open mike. And now that the newspapers I so love are truly evolving (or, yes, imploding, depending upon your perspective), I think there's an opportunity to evolve ourselves.

As you may know, BlogHer's mission is to create exposure for superb blogging by women. Each week, we'll select a blog post to celebrate, writing so exceptional that we think it's BlogHer's highest calling to highlight the blogger and her post across our network of 2,500 blogs and on BlogHer.com.

To find these posts, we would love your help and advice: Will you join us in this effort and nominate the best writing you find online? We've provided a Web form where you can recommend a post for our review - yours included!

Here's what we are looking for: Writing so good that BlogHer tells everyone to stop typing for just ten minutes and ponder the brilliance of the writer. That's right, the brilliance. Because the exceptional writing we read every day on blogs by women amazes us, and we want to share what we learn. BlogHer Voice of the Week posts can be:

- About any topic - hard news or soft, from Gaza to handbags
- Written, produced and/or drawn within the past 30-60 days
- May be blogged via text, illustration, audio, or video. English only please.
- From any blog (this one included) and/or site that accepts comments by readers at the individual article level
- Blogged according to our community guidelines

Let me be clear: This is not a popularity contest. BlogHer Voice of the Week is not designed as link-bait for BlogHer.com. We are not interested in developing some kind of awards system. We're not doing this merely to drive traffic to BlogHer.com, although we will certainly consider posts from BlogHer.com because women are writing amazing things on this site too.

Instead, BlogHer Voice of the Week is one more way in which when you say it, we share it. We want to acknowledge the power of the superb writing that we see on blogs by women every day -- pieces like this, this, this and this.

And with those examples -- bring on the new links! We're excited to share them around and celebrate your blogs. So...who should we consider this week?

Best,
Lisa

I am so glad I found this site. You provide a great opportunity for new bloggers to have a chance to be noticed and that is great.

Thanks.

I recently joined Blogher and am still trying ot figure this whole system out. I'm excited to have a way to check out the great writings of the week within a few clicks! I'm a journalist, and amazed at the growing world of blogging! Why didn't I do this sooner?!

OK, so I just went to the Apple store and got what I needed to fix my super-sensitive laptop track pad, thereby (hopefully) eliminating this annoying comment duplication thing.(Sorry!)

I  think this is a great idea. I've nominated a post from a favorite blogger (Slouching Mom) and  look forward to reading other nominees!

I do hope this forum highlights some lesser-known, but still fabulous writers.

I think it is a wonderful idea to show recognition to one blog post each week for its excellence in writing.  I believe that we write as a way to reach out to our readers and to express ourselves.  This recognition is not only an excellent way to showcase the exceptional women who write daily, but also a way to recognize the great thing that Blogher has going on here.

Perhaps some BlogHers will stumble across great writers who don't write to formula and give them their due.

I agree Julia! Welcome to BlogHer. Since you're thinking about better writing, here are two resources on the site I wanted to point out since we recently re-organized our site:

(1) The Writing tag in our Entertainment & Arts section:
http://www.blogher.com/topic/media-journalism/writ...

If you click here you find all the the posts about writing

(2) The Blogging & Social Media section of our Tech & Internet topic area: http://www.blogher.com/blogher-topics/blogging-soc...

I am relatively new to blogging and BlogHer.  I am constantly on the lookout for the kind of reads that will challenge/inspire me to better writing.  Thank you so much for putting this tool in place!

The more I learn about this community, the more I am truly floored by it.  There is nothing a strong network of women cannot do.

You'll note that we've added a little BlogHer of the Week badge to the right hand side bar above the fold. For now it links to this post, but as soon as we have our first BlogHer of the Week and start an archive page of all the great posts each week it will there. That page will also have a very prominent link to the submission form and to this post introducing the program.

BTW: You guys are doing a great (and prolific) job so far! Almost 75 posts submitted in, what, 24 hours?

As Lisa implored: Keep 'em coming, but do nominate individual posts that really struck a chord with you.

Thanks everyone.

This is a great idea for so many reasons! I hope that members will actively nominate their favorite blog posts on a consistent basis. I just don't have the time to surf around the net and find interesting things to read, so I depend on Blogher to do that for me! This community has become my personal assistant of sorts, always keeping me up to date on what I need to know, and thoroughly entertained when I just need a distraction from the every day routine of life.

I give a whole-hearted "thank you!" to Blogher for continuing to evolve. Sometimes we get used to the "norm" and don't want to branch out to other things, but Blogher is keeping up with the times, and that's good for all of us.

I do agree that the Blogher of the Week should be a prominant feature, easily accessible from the home page.

Looking forward to reading some great posts!

A long-time mentor of ours is coming into the office next week. Said he is ready to meet what we keep referring to as "the brains of the organization"! So. Dang. True. The hardest-working, most caring people I have ever known.

I honestly do not even want to think about where my blog would be without BlogHer. It has brought me so many beloved friends and readers and a true sense of belonging.

Plus, the extra income I receive from the ad program is so appreciated and my husband stopped looking down his nose quite so much at my little hobby when I scored him a completley sweet headset from BlogHer. Heh.

And this new program? Is WHY I love BlogHer.  It keeps getting bigger and bigger and yet I still feel like it each of us here are appreciated and loved.

The three of you (and your AMAZING staff) are too great for words. FWIW, this idea gets a big thumbs up from me.

For your link and for recommending a specific post. We've had a number of people write in today to recommend entire blogs. And we are definitely not equipped to review an entire oeuvre and pick out the best post. Recommending a specific piece of writing is definitely the way to go!

I think you're one of the first bloggers I met who told me something along the lines of "Well I'm not really a writer." I was thinking that last summer when your part of the community keynote made me weep. You have such a terrific voice. I hope that you'll nominate lots of blog posts from the writers you read in your travels!

The writing out there is SO rich, and deserves a highlight! Fabulous idea!

... to have had a post of mine included in your examples here. Not least because it is being part of the BlogHer community that provides so much inspiration to me, and that pushes me to be a better mom, woman, *writer*...

Love you madly, you and Elisa and Jory and the crazy-awesome-inspirationtastical community here.

I would like to nominate this post ( http://jenninejohnson.com/archives/1144 ) from my blog, not to bring recognition to myself but rather to the beautiful act of adoption. Every time I become discouraged with the problems of the world, I think of the Eiden family and realize there are wonderful things taking place.

Thank you,

Jennine Johnson

My stats let me know...I'm honored that you'd pull me out of the sea of awesomeness that is this Web site and the people who write on and in and all around it(and I'm extra happy to be linked next to my friend Suebob ( http://redstapler23.blogspot.com/ ), one of the many amazing people I've come to know through this site and in person at the conferences. :))

I love this idea because it's an ongoing "community keynote" of sorts and i think everyone who participated last summer in San Francisco was as blown away by that experience as I was.

By responding to my first e-mail three years ago, Lisa, you helped me begin the process of putting my words and pictures out into the world as only the Internet and self-publishing have allowed me to do. I got on the plane to the San Jose conference that summer not knowing a soul, had never been to California or west of Chicago, and came home having met people I still consider friends. Going back to school, changing my career, so many things have happened in my life as a result of being a part of the BlogHer community, help from Elisa, Jory and Denise, and the editors and members I've met and learned SO MUCH from. I know that's true for so many of us and I'm so glad to see it growing and changing all the time.

Thank you for thinking this up!  Given how much great stuff is out there, I've got a feeling each week's BlogHer of the Week post will be a "must read."

Not only to be on the lookout = more reading = more community building

But also to embrace this brilliance within us....it's there indeed. :)

Just sometimes needs a wee bit of a nudge to shine....How much fun!
