Women of Color and Marketing

During a panel at BlogHer in 2007 Kelly of Mocha Momma brought up a very important point that marketers and PR companies don't often approach women of color (any color) and it seemed as if these companies didn't know how to speak to this particular group of women. In those two years have companies gotten better at approaching bloggers of color? Are these women being offered similar opportunities as their counterparts?

How should companies approach bloggers of color and have any of these women who have been presented opportunities have anything to share on the do's and don'ts of dealing with PR companies?

Why does this topic need a vote? Seriously,
I'm asking.

There is a better than average chance that I'm not fully understanding the  purpose of voting on these topics; I mean, I understand time and space is limited and every topic dear to everyone cannot be covered but this seems to me something that would warrant inclusion without a vote.

It's about damn time.

The first time I ever saw Kelly is when she stood up in 2007 and asked "WHAT ABOUT US?"

Frankly she scared the snot out of me/impressed the everloving daylights our of me and these girls deserve this more than just a room of their own, they deserve their own track. And everyone should attend it.

Voted, but I'm with Charming

Voted, but I'm with Charming Driver. This should be something already included with no need for a vote.

Totally

Kelly, Karen and Heather all together on this subject? Totally.

Yes!, and it's why we brought it right to
marketers at BHB 08

Kelly got everyone's attention at BlogHer '07 with her comment...and she was ably backed by others, including Stefania from CityMama as I recall.

It was the direct inspiration for the panel:"We don't know what to do with you" at our next conference.

You should totally reach out to Stefania about joining you on this, because she has some really illuminating observations from running both Kimchi Mamas (clearly identified as a MommyBlog by/about moms of color) and CityMama (not so identified).

I would absolutely attend this session

It's important to us at PBN to include parents of color in our network of bloggers, and I would be very interested to hear from both sides - bloggers and PR - on this topic so that we can better facilitate these relationships via PBN.

count me in

I agree that this doesn't need to be voted on but do understand the logistical dilemma of trying to include so many interesting subjects. But as a women of color who blogs I know we need more exposure and opportunities to involve in the overall discussions.

I'm there!

Voted and will be there :)

Awesome ladies!

I would absolutely attend!

I'd go to any panel with Kelly on it. Just this morning I was quoting her panel chat at BlogHer 08 to my ten-year-old daughter, who complains that everyone at school makes fun of her butt. I told my girl that when Kelly goes out with her friends, she says, "Does this make my butt look big?" and if they say, "Yes," she says, "Good!!" That got a big smile of reassurance from my newly-anxious tweener.

Would totally be there & would love to
participate!!

I've spent over a decade in ad agency world working directly with many of the consumer brands we all buy. This is a very needed discussion as there is still a lot of disparity in the planning of marketing campaigns with many large brands when it comes to speaking to women of color. Latina & Asian American women's buying power is growing exponentially and is over $450 billion, and to add, African-American women's buying power is over $600 billion alone eclipsing the combined total of Latina & Asian American women. Many brands leave $$$ on the table and do not benefit because of old antiquated ways of talking to women of color, or simply outright choosing NOT to even talk to them at all. I have been in the trenches, and would love to share with everyone.

Agreed that this should be included without
question.

Also, I'd go to any panel with CityMama.  :D

Hands Down

Now you know how I feel about this topic! It's definitely a must and long overdue. So much so, in fact, that the ladies of MamaLaw decided to take matters into our own hands and launch Blogalicious 2009, The Social Gathering for Women Bloggers of Color, to address this very issue, among others.  Of course it would be in everybody's interest for BlogHer to feature this session b/c there is no denying their reach and membership! Plus, it's critical that the mainstream be a part of this dialogue. Bottom line: should they choose to include this session, I will certainly be there! And if they don't, please know that this very important issue will be on the agenda at Blogalicious.

Way to go gals!
