Haiti Storms, Cholera and You: Time to Thank Your Toilet

Haiti

I have a new best friend. She's cool and smooth and adaptable. Kind of like a Dragon-Tattooed-urbanite who can deal with any situation, from a tweaking guest at a rave, to the post-modern gut-angst of intellectuals. She's slow to rile too - give her a nudge and all she does is gurgle at you. She's the toilet in my house.  Read more >

Return to Haiti: Tweets from the Bus From Port-au-Prince

Supplies for Haiti

I'm en route to Haiti at the moment. Here are a sample of Twitter observations by people who are already there. They're tweeting from the bus between Port-Au-Prince and Gonaives, where we will be providing medical care in a remote mountain location that is housing refugees from the earthquake but that hasn't had medical care at all yet.  Read more >

Charity Starts at Home or in Haiti?

Haiti

On Jan 12, There was an Earthquake, the lives of the the people of Haiti are now changed, Forever! My life is changed, and I don't live in Haiti. My life is changed by what I've seen, what I've done. The people are amazing & inspire me to do more, even now that I am at home. I have a nice home, a comfortable bed, running water & indoor plumbing, and lots of creature comforts. I am not living in a tent, it is not the rainy season, or hurricane season here.  Read more >

Women of Haiti: Christine

Women of Haiti: Christine (Blogger's Picture)

How do you start a story like Christine's? Just being the mother of five -- or a mother in Haiti -- would be challenge enough. Now imagine being the mother of five, in Haiti, and one of your children, Christopher, having a medical condition needing treatment not available in Haiti. I can only imagine.  Read more >

Women Inside Haiti's Hospital

Day six: Because of a Haitian government directive, we now have to abandon our plans to continue to provide care in the massive sheet cities. We're a team of Bay Area healthcare providers, and this is my first ever relief work. When we worked in the sheet cities during the last days, I'd been amazed at the women of Haiti, amazed at both their suffering, and their strength.  Read more >

Haiti women (Picapp.com image)

When I was thinking about Women's History Month this year, my mind kept going back to Haiti. I felt a strong need to dig into the history of the women of Haiti. As I searched for books, I kept coming back to one anthology -- Walking on Fire: Stories of Survival and Resistance.  Read more >

Women of Haiti: Renette

Renette in Haiti

I met Renette on my second day in Haiti. We didn't get to know her as well as our other patient's mother, but she touched my heart in a special way. I continue to pray for her and think of her everyday. I met Renette when we received patients from the USNS Comfort. She accompanied her infant son Easia. He was suffering from some kind of unknown neurological problem and was developmentally delayed. What a beautiful family. Renette and her son Easia.  Read more >

Violence Against Women and Social Assessment of Haitian Camps

Woman in Haiti

While I lay in a tent in FIRE's camp in Haiti I remember one of the first popular songs that changed social consciousness regarding violence against women, at a time when the subject was a well-known secret and there was no political, social and cultural acknowledgment of violence against women as a violation of the human rights of women.  Read more >
