One of the most exciting parts about the current immigration reform movement is seeing how so many groups have been actively lobbying for the concerns of women and families. With the bipartisan immigration reform bill slated to hit the Senate floor early next week, women are hitting the Internet with letter writing campaigns, blog posts, and photos to support the bipartisan plan for comprehensive immigration reform.
A really eye-catching example of online advocacy is We Belong Together’s Fedoras for Fairness campaign, featuring celebrities including Christy Turlington, Rosie Perez, and Cynthia Nixon. The stars were photographed with the hats by fashion photographer Albert Watson.
There’s also a video where the celebrities explain why they support immigration reform –- and what they hope lawmakers will include in the final bill.
The campaign also encourages readers to snap photos of themselves wearing fedoras and post them on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram with the tag #fairdora.
Fedoras for Fairness is likely the most striking campaign, but it's not the only way women are organizing online.
Over at StandWithFamilies.org, people can submit Dear Congress letters to their representative to tell their own immigration story or simply to voice their support of immigration reform. The letters will be collected and delivered to Capitol Hill tomorrow, June 5.
The YWCA is hosting a blog carnival with an emphasis on the reforms that will help women and children in immigrant communities, such as family reunification, health care for people on the pathway to citizenship, and protection for victims of sexual assault.
Is immigration reform important to you? What do you hope Congress will change in the current law? Tell us in the comments.
