Women over forty, what does your career umbrella look like?
As a woman over forty I can look back on the life and career transitions that got me where I am today and what propels me forward. Lately, I have been particularly interested in looking at the ever changing designs in my career umbrella. It has been with me covering my every move, perfectly adaptable to all weather. The spokes were strong; the framework for what has become an incredible journey. Even when I was scared to make a decision or forced to make one, it held up in the wind and protected me.
The umbrella came with a tag called Social Service. At first, I wasn't sure what that was or whether it would hold up. I started off in retail and I didn't quite see the value in that experience until much later, but when a spoke went to Victim Services I understood I bought the right umbrella. The immersion into life with all of its trials and tribulations was welcomed. The ability to learn, the honor and respect for the lives of others, the teamwork, the sharing and commitment. There were so many avenues to explore under the protection of my umbrella.
Every time I opened it up fully I had the ability to spoke off in another direction and so I chose career development, volunteerism, counselling, facilitating, writing, blogging and so much more. It is pretty, with multiple colours, a tapestry of all the signatures of people who helped guide me along the way. As I move forward, in what they say is midlife, I can't wait to see how I will spoke off from here and just how long it will last. I do know it was a purchase I will never regret, it gave me purpose.
To all those fabulous women over forty...How do see your career/professional life thus far?
