Won't You Please Go to Sleep??

Sleep time has been a bit of a struggle in our home recently.

With a nod to Adam Mansbach's "Go the --to Sleep"...

"Won't You Please Go to Sleep??"

You've had lots of fun. The long day is through.

I’m hoping tonight will bring something new.

Get your paci and blanket. It’s time to count sheep.

For the love of God, won’t you please go to sleep?

You know that I love you. You’re the child o’ my dreams

I melt at your cries, not to mention the screams.

We both know who’s boss here and it’s clearly not me.

For the love of God, won’t you please go to sleep?

I hum oh so softly and pull you in near.

I can see in your eyes, you're sensing my fear.

I look away quickly and and you say, “Mama, read!”

For the love of God, won’t you please go to sleep?

I say nonchalantly, “Now get up in your bed”.

I’m fooled for a moment as you lay down your head.

Then almost as quickly, you kick off your sheets.

For the love of God, won’t you please go to sleep?

Nothing doing you say with that mischievous smile.

I know in an instant I’ll be here a while.

You bounce up and down with obvious glee.

For the love of God, won’t you please go to sleep?

No nap in the daytime, this is how it has been

Yet you’re still awake and it’s quarter past ten.

I don’t understand it.  How can this be?

For the love of God, won’t you please go to sleep?

I’ve read all the books and heeded advice.

It’s all been for naught, though.  Why won’t you play nice?

Night after night, you’re making me weep.

For the love of God, won’t you please go to sleep?

At last your eyes flutter, your breathing gets deep.

Could it be?  Yes it’s true!  You’re finally asleep!

Tomorrow will be different. One can dare to dream.

For the love of God, won’t you please go to sleep?
