Working together without compromising your marriage
By kaira on April 03, 2009
While I never imagined that I would end up working for the family business, I love my job. And while it is very rewarding, working with family can also be a challenge. My husband, Harley, and I have
worked together at Real Living for 12 years now, and it has been a great balancing act to maintain stability at home and at work.
Whenever people say, “I just don’t know how you do it,” the first thing I tell them is it takes practice and patience. You have to figure out a system and communication style that works for both of you and your kids.
Delineating responsibilities is a must. Make sure that each of you is qualified for the responsibilities you assume, which should extend into the home as well. We have four children, and we both work long hours. So that means we both share the daily tasks of caring for the kids and maintaining the house.
If that sounds difficult, it can be. But when things are going well at work and at home, it is doubly rewarding. It helps to stay focused on the collective vision between you and your partner. You have one, don’t you? If not, schedule some time alone to figure it out. You’ll need to be on the same page—working toward the same goal—in order to make it work.
