Would a "Women's" Phone be a Marketing Flub for HTC?

Rumors about a new Android phone marketed specifically to women have hit the news lately. The rumored phone is the HTC Bliss. Tech reports like this one at Time's Techland show us an Android phone in "calming" color schemes, preloaded with apps all the ladies are sure to love – like calorie counters – and equipped with dangling charms that light up when you have a call.

The reactions of female bloggers to this rumor suggest that HTC's ideas of how to market tech gadgets to women may be off base.

Spydergrrl wrote What NOT to Buy a Geek Mom for Mother's Day (or: Why I Hate Tech Targeted "To Women").

All this stereotyping might be good for brainstorming sessions, but it just annoys the heck out of me. I can't handle when companies think they are catering to me, and they are just getting it all wrong and insulting me in the process.

Spydergrrl also points out:

Women are not afraid of technology or hardware. The general female population has figured out the Internet and texting and PVRs and computers. We are not morons. Some of us are even good at tech! Heck, some of us even write about it! Imagine that!

At The Mary Sue, Jamie Frevele says, "Oh, marketing. Just stop." and points out,

Um, I actually have a Droid X (on Verizon) and had no idea it wasn’t geared for my delicate lady sensibilities. As far as I know, my delicate little lady hands can work the keyboard just fine. And when it makes sounds at me, I don’t get all freaked out by it because I have a variety of fun sounds to choose from. I mean, was I not supposed to pay attention to their advertising? Nothing in the product description signaled that I and other female humans weren’t meant to buy this phone. Was it the robots? That scary “DROID” sound?

At This is My Next Joanna Stern has trouble even believing the rumor. In HTC Bliss: a Verizon Android phone for women? she writes,

To be honest, we’ve had a really hard time believing some of this information — not because there’s anything here that’s technically impossible or because we didn’t trust our source, but because we simply can’t imagine a company creating a phone specifically for American women in this day and age . . .

Sarah Perez goes so far as to call the design idea clueless in HTC Bliss: An Android Phone Designed for Women, by Clueless Men. She jokes about the "calming" color scheme.

The HTC Bliss will also have a greenish-gray rubber back so "women can have a better grip of the phone," writes Joanna Stern, explaining one of the phone's differentiating features. I'm not sure how that's a feature with female appeal, but there you have it.

The phone will be thin (.54 inches), and will sport "calming" wallpapers in addition to the "calming" green tones of the phone itself. The overuse of "calming" by HTC to describe the device, frankly, is bordering on offensive.

DO I LOOK LIKE SOMEONE WHO NEEDS TO BE CALMED?

Oh.

More seriously, Sarah goes on the talk about the recent release of the iPhone in white and how that may be driving Apple's competition to come up with an idea that will set them apart from the iPhone.

If HTC has been testing the waters by letting these rumors leak about the phone for women, I think they're getting the feedback they need: women don't want to be treated any differently when it comes to tech. Just make it do the job, that's all we need.

I'm calm enough on my own. I don't need additional green phone-wallpaper to get that!

Been considering getting a new phone, since my blackberry is 2.5 years old, nearly, and isn't super fast with the web browsing. But a cheesetastic "women's phone"? No thanks.

I almost came right back and typed this very thing but I thought that might be overkill. Hahaha

And we'd need the "Find a U-Haul Dealer" app, too.

So true--I had just been going with the HTC extreme-stereotype approach.

Although now I'm envisioning little neoprene covers for phones, cut in the shape of tank tops....

In order to market to women you have to make an emotional connection. Look at Oprah. Look at Bethany Frankel.

Oprah struck a chord by knowing what her viewers wanted. Boy did she deliver. Women are her target audience and she hit it spot on crossing race, income, and any other demographic.

Bethany Frankel had a Skinny Girl Margarita drink. I saw her make it on You Tube and I started making it at home. I also gave gifts to my friends with that theme. She took her idea to the big boys at all the major liquor companies and they turned her away. Yes, she was on TV and that helped the marketing of her all-in-one mixed drink in a bottle with 100 calories. What woman wouldn't want that and "feel skinny".

I don't know if I would buy into this type of a 4G droid phone. I have been looking for months on what I want in my next upgrade and I haven't made up my mind. I know that I want something with EASY DIRECTIONS and EASE OF USE. I get frustrated with all the steps to get something accomplished. IF the phone can automatically accomplish something for me without me being a computer science geek than that is what I would buy. I don't have time to fuss with all the technology. I have a full time job, a house and family to care for and myself to take care of.

that this is a mistake or prank. Because how incredibly insulting would it be if it were real?

But, I can imagine the brainstorming session and someone coming up with a "Women's" phone that was customized to what women would want and then that idea going very very wrong.

I think the only thing going for the details of this phone model is that it isn't pink.

But charms? Really? I'm not 12. I don't need BeDazzle my possessions.

My cell phone is a cell phone. It doesn't need to be pretty. It just needs to work.

I say, forget the flannel designs. Put your phone in a tank top. Yeah, that would make it a great phone for lesbian women.

I just bought a green-toned cover for my iPhone the other day. It was hanging on a rack with all the other covers. Oddly, it didn't say 'calming colors for women only' above it.

Does HTC stand for Hate The Concept because I hate this so much! I can't imagine what the strategy meetings were like. Women want to count calories! They need a pretty color!

Ugh. I couldn't agree more with Victoria. What's next? A phone for lesbian women, where you can choose from six different flannel-patterned wallpapers, ringtones of Melissa Etheridge, the Indigo Girls, or k.d. lang, and preloaded with "Softball Roster" and "Sperm Bank Search" apps?

While I tell them to bite me. The first thing I'd do with a pre-loaded calorie counter is figure out how the heck to delete it.

It isn't Google's suggestion that maybe the thing a woman most wants is a calorie counter.

I might suggest there plenty of dudes with Droids who could use a "calorie counter" more than their female counterparts.

But really Google, I do appreciate you thinking of my waistline. I'm hoping the other app it comes with is a housework tracker and maybe a nailpolish color selection tool.
